A No-Nonsense Guide To Breaking Free from Fossilised Errors
by Olly Richards
Have you ever felt like your language learning has completely stalled? You've been living abroad for years, or studying diligently at home, but those same mistakes keep creeping into your speech.
Your friends understand you perfectly, you can handle daily conversations with ease, yet somehow you're not getting any better.
If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing what language experts call fossilised errors. And you're definitely not alone.

A Reader Question About Fossilised Errors
Recently, I received an email from Owen that perfectly captures this frustrating phenomenon. He wrote:
“Hi Olly, I wonder if you could do a post about language fossilisation. My daughter-in-law is Ukrainian and has been living in the UK for several years, and her English doesn't seem to get much better. I hear the same syntactical patterns, reluctance to use past tense forms, and many other peculiarities. When I learn languages, I make it a point of pride to get the standard of my language as good as possible and to learn from mistakes and corrections, so I find it strange when others are not like me.”
Owen's question touches on something that affects millions of language learners worldwide, so let's dive into what fossilisation really is and, more importantly, how you can break through it.
What Is Language Fossilisation?
Think of a fossil buried in the ground. It's something that died long ago and turned into a solid lump of material that doesn't change. The analogy with language learning is remarkably apt.
Language fossilisation occurs when your progress simply stops. You've been studying for months or years, and your language feels frozen in time.
Most frustratingly, the mistakes you make become embedded in your speech patterns, turning into what we call “fossilised errors.”
These aren't random slip-ups. They're consistent, persistent language errors that have become a normal part of how you communicate.
You might always struggle with the same verb tenses, consistently mispronounce certain sounds, or repeatedly make the same grammatical mistakes.
The tricky part? These embedded mistakes can be incredibly difficult to break because they've become automatic. Your brain has essentially decided, “This works well enough,” and stopped trying to improve.
By the way, if you're interested in diving deeper into this topic, I highly recommend Scott Thornbury's blog “The Defossilization Diaries.”
Scott, a well-known language teacher, documented his journey of dusting off and levelling up his 20-year-old Spanish. It's fascinating reading for anyone interested in the more academic side of language learning.
Why Do Fossilised Errors Become Stuck?
Here's the thing that many language learners don't realise: fossilisation often happens precisely because you've become too comfortable.
When Owen's daughter-in-law first arrived in the UK, she would have improved rapidly. Everything was new, challenging, and required her full attention. She had to stretch herself linguistically just to survive daily interactions.
But what happens after a while? You start seeing the same people every day. You talk about the same topics. If you work, you probably deal with the same subject matter repeatedly.
In this familiar environment, your brain focuses on meeting your basic communication needs first.
You learn to order food, ask for directions, handle work conversations, and chat with friends. Once you can communicate satisfactorily and get your message across, many people simply don't see the need to push further.
And honestly? That's completely understandable.
The Root Causes Of Language Fossilisation
Limited Environmental Challenge
The most common cause of fossilisation is staying in one environment for too long. When your daily linguistic demands remain constant, there's no pressure to grow.
Lack of Correction
In my own experience with Spanish, I've noticed that most people simply don't correct adult language learners. My friends understand what I mean, so why would they interrupt the flow of conversation to fix my grammar?
Years ago, whilst working on a Spanish short story collection, I collaborated with a fantastic Spanish proofreader called Maribel.
She made notes throughout the manuscript, pointing out errors I'd been making for years without realising. It was eye-opening and slightly humbling.
Suddenly I thought, “My goodness, there are all these things I just don't think about in Spanish.” It made me realise that if I really wanted to perfect my Spanish, I still had quite some way to go.
Neglecting Key Skills
Most learners struggling with fossilised errors have developed one or two language skills whilst completely neglecting others.
If you live abroad, you probably speak a lot but rarely read or write in your target language. If you study at home, you might read and listen extensively but have limited speaking practice.
This imbalance creates gaps in your linguistic development that eventually become permanent weak spots.
When Students Don't Want to Improve
Now, here's where Owen's question becomes particularly interesting. He mentions that he takes pride in perfecting his languages and learning from corrections. But not everyone shares this drive.
I'm exactly the same as Owen. I hate knowing I'm making mistakes and will always try to fix them. However, the reality is that many people genuinely don't care about achieving perfect accuracy.
Once they reach a level where they can communicate effectively and get their needs met, they're perfectly content. They see no reason to invest the significant time and effort required to reach advanced proficiency.
And you know what? That's absolutely fine.
This is crucial to understand: if someone doesn't want to improve, they won't. All the advice in the world won't help if the motivation isn't there.
Breaking Through Fossilised Errors: Practical Solutions
So, what do you do if you genuinely want to break through your language plateau? The answer lies in shaking up your entire approach.
Do Something Radically Different
If you feel your language has become fossilised, you must do something completely different from your normal routine. If you don't, where will the impetus for change come from?
If you usually speak a lot: Stop and focus on reading or writing instead.
If you're a bookworm: Start speaking more and engage in real conversations.
If you listen to podcasts all day: Try writing regularly or reading challenging texts.
The key is identifying which of the four core skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) you've been neglecting and attacking it head-on.
Work with a Tutor on Your Weak Skills
This is perhaps the fastest way to break through fossilisation. If you typically just speak (like Owen's daughter-in-law probably does), start working with a tutor on regular writing exercises.
There's nowhere to hide with writing. It lays your language bare on the page, forcing you to confront every grammatical structure, vocabulary choice, and stylistic decision. A good tutor will immediately pull you up on fossilised errors and push you to express yourself more precisely.
This heightened awareness will filter through to your speaking as well.
Seek Out Correction
Actively ask native speakers to correct you. Most people avoid correcting adults out of politeness, but if you specifically request feedback, many will be happy to help.
You might say something like: “I'm really trying to improve my English. Would you mind pointing out mistakes when I make them?”
Challenge Yourself with New Contexts
If you always discuss the same topics, deliberately seek out new contexts that require different vocabulary and structures.
Join a debate club, take a university course, volunteer for a charity, or start a hobby that requires you to learn specialised terminology. These new contexts will expose gaps in your knowledge and force you to grow.
Fossilised Errors FAQ
How to correct fossilised mistakes?
To correct fossilised mistakes, you need consistent practice, active feedback, and self-awareness. Recording yourself, working with a tutor, and focusing on problem areas can gradually replace old errors with correct patterns.
What is a fossilised grammatical error?
A fossilised grammatical error is a repeated mistake in grammar that becomes fixed over time, even after years of study. For example, always using the wrong verb tense despite knowing the rule.
What is a fossilised pronunciation error?
A fossilised pronunciation error happens when a learner keeps pronouncing a sound incorrectly out of habit. For instance, consistently mispronouncing “th” in English as “s” or “z.”
Your Next Steps: A Practical Action Plan
Ready to break free from fossilisation? Here's what to do:
Assess your current habits: Which language skills do you use most? Which do you avoid?
Choose your challenge: Pick the skill you've been neglecting most and commit to practising it regularly.
Find accountability: Whether it's a tutor, language exchange partner, or online community, get someone to provide feedback.
Embrace discomfort: Remember, if it feels easy and familiar, you're probably not growing.
Be patient but persistent: Breaking fossilised patterns takes time, but with consistent effort, you will see improvement.
The bottom line is this: fossilisation isn't permanent. With the right approach, desire to improve, and willingness to step outside your comfort zone, you can absolutely break through to the next level.
Language learning is a journey, not a destination. Sometimes we need to take a different path to keep moving forward.
