Short Stories In Italian: Learn A New Language With Stories You’ll Love To Read
by Olly Richards
When you're learning Italian, there are multiple methods you can try. But one of the best and most enjoyable ways to improve your Italian skills is by reading a short story in Italian.
When you read in Italian, you gradually learn to think in that language, which flows onto learning to listen and speak.
It can be hard to find amusing beginner stories for Italian learners, so if you're hunting around here's what I recommend:
In this article, I'll let you in on some of the secrets of stories and their role in language learning, and tell you exactly what to expect from these Italian short story books.

Why You Should Learn Through Short Stories
Did you ever imagine that you could learn Italian by reading short stories?
I've learned eight languages myself, and I've been teaching them for years, too. I've studied many teaching and learning methods in my quest to find the best, and hands down, I've found that learning through stories is the most powerful of all.
Why? Because it's fun!
When you're read a short story in Italian, you forget that you're studying. You follow the plot, cheer on the characters and absorb Italian language concepts naturally, just as children do when they're learning to read and write.
Stories are effective for learning for a few reasons:
Context – You're learning vocabulary and Italian grammar in context, not in isolation as you do from a textbook or in a language class.
Emotion – Stories are emotionally engaging. Putting feelings into your learning makes it more memorable because our brains are wired to respond to emotion.
Meaning – Of course, it's easier to understand and follow a series of relatable events in a short story in Italian than simply memorising a set of rules. That's why fiction is so great for language learning.
When you read a short story in Italian, you're not only expanding your vocabulary and naturally absorbing grammar. The plots hook you in; making it easy to read one page and then the next. Before you know it, you've read a whole chapter… and then a complete story.
Your sense of achievement skyrockets when you find you can actually read and understand a short story in Italian long before you thought it would be possible.
And that's the beauty of reading short stories in Italian. They combine fun, entertainment and education, all wrapped up in eight, gripping yarns.
Introducing… Short Stories In Italian
I've published three short story books in Italian:
Short Stories In Italian For Beginners
Vol 2. Short Stories In Italian For Beginners
Short Stories In Italian For Intermediate
In these one-of-a-kind books, I use my unique StoryLearning® method to teach you Italian the natural way.
You won't learn through rules and practice exercises with this approach. And, you won't get frustrated by language that's beyond your present level.
Instead, StoryLearning® allows you to absorb Italian naturally, with stories pitched at Beginner and Intermediate levels.
Volumes one and two of the Italian Beginner series each include eight, gripping stories at the A2-B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR.)
And when you've finished those, you'll be ready for the next eight yarns in the Intermediate (CEFR Levels B1-B2) book.
The beauty (and secret) of it is that you'll be reading a short story in Italian at your level, so you can focus on enjoying reading without feeling overwhelmed.
The result? Learning Italian becomes easy and enjoyable, not a task you put off doing each day.
Of course, I don't leave anything to chance with these books. They're carefully designed to be easy to use and comprehensive in their approach, so you can get the most out of them.
Here's what you'll find inside:
Fun reading practice designed for your beginner or intermediate level lets you spend more time reading and less time with your nose in the dictionary.
Accessible grammar which has you learning Italian language structure naturally without frustration or overwhelm.
Authentic spoken dialogues give you Italian conversation expressions and help improve your speaking ability even when you're reading.
Chapter summaries and comprehension questions; these invaluable aids guide you through each short story in Italian, allowing you to follow the plot and ensuring you're ready for the next chapter.
Controlled language at your level. The beginner books include the 1,000 most frequent Italian words, while the intermediate book features thousands more.
Vocabulary lists allow you to check unfamiliar words and get back to the short story in Italian within seconds.
Beautiful hand-drawn illustrations bring the stories to life.
To make these Italian stories even more useful, we now have high-quality new audiobooks available as a separate purchase.
There's even a handy Interactive app so you can read, listen and learn all at the same time. Whether you're at home or on the go, “I don't have enough time” will never ring true for you again.
