The Spanish Conditional Tense: A Savvy Learnerโs Guide To Mastering The Conditional Quickly
by Olly Richards
When you learn Spanish, you can get to a point where you've mastered the basics. But still sound like a beginner or early intermediate speaker when you talk to native speakers, right?
It's frustrating to feel like you're just not holding conversations with the level of fluency you'd like, isn't it?
Mastering the Spanish conditional tense is one of the ways you can sound more like a native speaker by making just one small addition to your language skill.
So what is the Spanish conditional tense? Through this post, you'll learn:
What the Spanish conditional tense is
Why using the conditional tense will help you sound more like a native Spanish speaker
How to conjugate the conditional tense, including the most common irregular verbs
When you're most likely to encounter and use the conditional in conversation
Pro Tip
By the way, if you want to learn Spanish through stories, not rules, my top recommendation for language learners is my Uncovered courses, which teach you through StoryLearningยฎ. Click here to find out more and get a free trial of the method.

What Is the Spanish Conditional Tense?
The Spanish conditional tense is used to discuss hypotheticals and probabilities.
If that doesn't sound like something you would use often, you might be surprised to learn that the conditional is actually fairly common in day-to-day conversations.
It often helps to think of the Spanish conditional as โwould/could/shouldโ in English. Take a look at these examples:
You should study more. Deberรญas estudiar mรกs
Could you come with me? ยฟPodrรญas venir conmigo?
I would not like to go to the beach today. No me gustarรญa ir a la playa hoy
It may not seem like an important addition to your grammar, but the conditional tense is one way you can sound more like a native speaker without changing too much about how you speak Spanish already.
Why Does Using The Conditional Improve Your Fluency?
One reason using the conditional tense will make you sound more like a native hispanohablante is because not many beginning speakers use it.
The conditional tense can be difficult to master at first because it not quite the present, past, or future tense. As it's hard to fit into any one specific timeframe, many new Spanish learners avoid it.
How can you use the conditional tense in everyday conversation?
Let's say your friends are getting ready to go to a concert that you're not sure you want to attend.
When they ask you, ยฟVienes con nosotros al concierto? (Are you coming with us to the concert?), how do you respond?
Maybe you don't like the band or you don't want to spend the money to go, but you don't feel like explaining all of your reasons to your friends. You might be embarrassed by the situation or not want to hurt their feelings.
You do have to work the next morning, so that seems like a good enough reason to decline the invitation. So how would you let them know that you can't go because you have to work in the morning?
You could say:
Voy pero tengo que trabajar maรฑana (I will go, but I have to work in the morning)
OR Irรญa pero tengo que trabajar maรฑana (I would go, but I have to work in the morning).
Which sounds more like an exchange between friends? While you would definitely be understood with either response, the second sentence feels more natural and softens the blow a bit.
When you understand and can use the conditional yourself, you'll automatically communicate more like a native speaker because Spanish speakers use the conditional all the time.
I'll go over more specific situations after showing you how to conjugate the conditional tense.
How Do You Form The Conditional Tense?
Another reason I recommend Spanish learners learn the conditional tense is because it's so easy to conjugate. You can improve your fluency quickly with the conditional because there are so few rules and irregular verbs to learn.
With most verbs, you form the conditional tense by adding an ending to the infinitive. Since you're simply adding on to the full infinitive, you don't even have to remember separate rules for โar, โer, and โir verbs.
Here's a conjugation chart for the regular conditional verbs hablar, comer, and escribir:
hablar
comer
escribir
yo
hablarรญa
comerรญa
escribirรญa
tรบ
hablarรญas
comerรญas
escribirรญas
รฉl/ella/Ud.
hablarรญa
comerรญa
escribirรญa
nosotros
hablarรญamos
comerรญamos
escribirรญamos
vosotros
hablarรญais
comerรญais
escribirรญais
ellos/ellas/Uds.
hablarรญan
comerรญan
escribirรญan
Spanish conditional tense conjugation
You have even less to remember than usual because the first person singular (yo) and third person singular (รฉl, ella, Ud.) are the same.
It's that simple.
Even irregular verbs are simple in the conditional because there are only 12 of them:
caber (fit)
decir (say)
haber (have/be)
hacer (do/make)
poder (be able to)
poner (put)
querer (want)
saber (know)
salir (leave)
tener (have)
valer (cost/be worth)
venir (come)
You don't even have to remember complicated endings because the verb endings are the same. All you have to do is remember how to change the infinitive before tacking on the appropriate ending.
Each of the 12 irregular verbs falls into one of three basic groups, which will help you remember their conjugation:
1.Verbs Where The Last Vowel Is Removed (5 Verbs)
The only verbs that fall into this category are โer verbs:
caber
haber
poder
querer
saber
With these five verbs, simply remove the โeโ in the infinitive and tack on the applicable ending. For example, saber becomes โsabrโ before the endings are applied:
saber
yo
sabrรญa
tรบ
sabrรญas
รฉl/ella/Ud.
sabrรญa
nosotros
sabrรญamos
vosotros
sabrรญais
ellos/ellas/Uds.
sabrรญan
Irregular Spanish conditional: Saber
2. Verbs Where The Last Vowel Is Replaced With A D (5 Verbs)
This next set is very similar to the first, except instead of removing the last vowel, you replace it with a โdโ. These verbs can be either โer or โir verbs:
poner
salir
tener
valer
venir
With this set of five verbs, replace the final โeโ or โiโ with โdโ and add the ending. In the example below, tener is changed to โtendrโ and then conjugated like normal:
tener
yo
tendrรญa
tรบ
tendrรญas
รฉl/ella/Ud.
tendrรญa
nosotros
tendrรญamos
vosotros
tendrรญais
ellos/ellas/Uds.
tendrรญan
Irregular Spanish conditional: tener
3. Verbs That Don't Follow A Particular Pattern (2 Verbs)
The final set contains only two verbs (decir and hacer) that do not follow either pattern.
In both instance, the entire verb stem is changed before the ending is applied. Decir becomes โdirโ while hacer changes to โharโ:
decir
hacer
yo
dirรญa
harรญa
tรบ
dirรญas
harรญas
รฉl/ella/Ud.
dirรญa
harรญa
nosotros
dirรญamos
harรญamos
vosotros
dirรญais
harรญas
ellos/ellas/Uds.
dirรญan
harรญan
Irregular Spanish conditionals: decir, hacer
Learning twelve verbs in three patterns is much simpler than some verb conjugations in Spanish, especially when you realise that the irregular stems in the conditional are the same in the simple future tense.
But be sure to expose yourself to as much written and spoken Spanish as possible so that you see the conditional in context. That'll also help you pick up the different forms more quickly and use it more easily.
When Do You Use The Spanish Conditional Tense?
Most common uses of the Spanish conditional tense fall into one of four categories. Here are the four most common situations in which you'll use the conditional tense in Spanish:
1. Possibilities In The Future
ยฟA quรฉ hora saldrรญas al aeropuerto? (What time would you leave for the airport?)
Me gustarรญa estudiar espaรฑol en Espaรฑa. (I would like to study Spanish in Spain.)
These are both possibilities. They might happen or they might not. The question and the answer are not dependent on a specific commitment. Instead, these are both simply hypotheticals. They might happen tomorrow or next week or next year or never.
2. Making Excuses
The example we used earlier of missing a concert with friends falls into this category.
Irรญa a la fiesta, pero no tengo dinero. (I would go to the party, but I don't have any money)
Hablarรญamos con el jefe, pero no estรก en su oficina.(I would talk to the boss, but he's not in his office)
Notice that both of these examples use pero before giving the justification, which is a surefire clue for you. When you are giving (or getting) an excuse, pero is your signal that it's time to use the conditional tense.
3. Asking For Or Giving Advice
Similar to situation #1, asking for and giving advice is a specific type of hypothetical expression. Often, advice comes in the form of asking and describing possible solutions to a problem:
ยฟQuรฉ harรญas en esta situaciรณn?(What would you do in this situation?)
Yo le dirรญa la verdad. (I would tell him the truth)
In both the question and the response, the conditional is used because both are hypotheticals.
4. To Be Polite
Finally, just like โwould/couldโ in English, the conditional tense is used to be polite.
Instead of
ยฟTendrรกs tiempo maรฑana para ayudarme?โ (Will you have time tomorrow to help me?)
you would say ยฟTendrรญas tiempo maรฑana para ayudarme? (Would you have time tomorrow to help me?)
It's just more polite.
Break Through The Beginner Barrier With The Spanish Conditional
By this point, you can probably see how much the conditional tense can improve your fluency.
Sometimes, fluency isn't as complicated as you think. You don't have to learn thousands of words or abandon your current life to go live abroad.
With just one simple conjugation, you can open up an entire new tense that will help you sound more like a native speaker and expand your options in all your conversations in Spanish.
The conditional will help you sound more polite, express possibilities and hypotheses and even help you give advice in Spanish. So start using it in your conversations today. And look out for it as your make contact with written or spoken Spanish.
