Have you ever wondered whether you should just immerse yourself in a language or whether you need to buckle down with grammar books and flashcards?
It's one of the biggest debates in language learning, and in this post I'm diving deep into this question after receiving a brilliant challenge from one of my readers.
I got a question from Massoud, a 24-year-old Persian speaker from Iran who's achieved remarkable fluency in English.
But here's what's fascinating: he believes his success came entirely through unconscious language learning, and he's questioning my previous advice about the importance of deliberate study.
His challenge has got me thinking, and I want to share my perspective on this crucial topic.

The Unconscious vs. Conscious Learning Debate
Let me start by explaining what we mean by unconscious language learning. It's that natural process where you pick up a language without deliberately studying grammar rules or memorising vocabulary lists.
Think of how children learn their mother tongue or how some people seem to absorb English just by watching Friends for years.
Massoud described something many language learners will recognise.
He explained how the moment he starts consciously studying anything in English, “something in the brain activates which I would call this monitoring thing which will constantly monitor whatever I'm talking about and it'll literally kill the flow of the conversation because you're constantly monitoring whatever you're going to talk about.”
This is a profound observation. That internal monitor can indeed be the enemy of fluent speech.
When you're consciously thinking about grammar rules mid-conversation, it's like trying to drive whilst constantly checking your speedometer. It disrupts the natural flow.
But here's where it gets interesting. Massoud's English is absolutely sensational. I'd put it at C2 level, which is near-native proficiency.
Clearly, his approach of unconscious language learning through immersion and exposure has worked brilliantly for him.
Why Adults Can't Replicate Childhood Language Learning
So if unconscious language learning worked so well for Massoud, why don't I recommend it for everyone? The answer lies in understanding the unique circumstances that make natural language acquisition possible.
Based on Massoud's level and background, I suspect he's had something most adults don't have: the luxury of time and extensive exposure to English over many years.
Perhaps he attended an international school, had English-speaking friends, or grew up in an environment where English was prevalent. This isn't uncommon in many parts of the world, particularly for educated individuals.
“You have had something that adults don't have which is the luxury of time…you can learn very naturally over time without any pressure.”
Olly Richards
This kind of immersive environment is absolutely the best way to learn a second language. It's a fantastic and, frankly, privileged situation that enables natural subconscious language acquisition. But here's the key point: most adults can't replicate these conditions.
Consider the typical adult language learner: they've got a busy job, perhaps a family to look after, they don't live in an immersion environment, and they have no pressing life-or-death need to learn the target language.
They simply can't spend years surrounded by the language the way Massoud likely did.
When I was learning Cantonese, I would have loved to spend hours a day surrounded by native speakers, have dozens of friends from Hong Kong, and have nothing but Cantonese around me.
I'm sure I'd have learnt incredibly quickly, but I can't replicate those conditions. Most adults are in the same boat.
I did eventually make it to Hong Kong!
When Extensive Listening Works (And When It Doesn't)
This brings us to extensive listening, which was the original topic that sparked Massoud's question.
Extensive listening means spending lots of time listening for pleasure to things like radio programmes, podcasts, or TV shows in your target language, rather than textbook audio.
Many people find they can listen to content for hours and hours yet feel like they haven't learned anything. There's a good reason for this, and it comes down to a fundamental principle of language learning.
“One of the most important principles of language learning is that you need to be learning things that are slightly above your level.”
Olly Richards
This concept, known as i+1, suggests that the most effective learning material is content that's only slightly above your current level. It's challenging enough to help you grow, but not so difficult that you're completely lost.
The problem with extensive listening for most people is that there's simply too much going on.
The content is often far above their level, they can't pause and slow it down in many cases, they can't read transcripts simultaneously, and the bar is set too high for effective learning.
However, extensive listening can be incredibly effective if you have the right conditions: plenty of time, content at an appropriate level, and ideally, the ability to combine it with other learning methods.
The Time Factor: 10,000 Hours vs. Efficient Study
Here's where we need to have an honest conversation about efficiency in adult language learning.
The popular idea suggests you need about 10,000 hours to reach world-class level in any skill. Now, that number is highly debated, but let's use it as a benchmark.
If Massoud has been learning English through natural exposure for, say, 10 years, you could argue that whilst the results are fantastic, it's actually quite an inefficient use of time.
I don't mean this negatively at all, because obviously his English is superb. But if you break down the actual time investment, you might find that an adult could achieve similar results much faster through focused study.
“You can learn a language in a year or two to a very high level if you want to…you don't need to spend 10 years doing it.”
Olly Richards
This is why I advocate for adults to exploit the skills they do have: study skills and intelligence. Adults are capable of analytical thinking and structured learning in ways that children might not be.
For most adult beginners, the fastest way to make progress is through intelligent study combined with lots of listening, reading and speaking.
I often use the example of people who say they learned English just by watching Friends or movies. My response is always: “But how long did it take you to do that?”
If someone spent 10 years watching English TV to reach fluency, whilst that's a pleasant way to learn, it's not necessarily the most efficient for someone who wants faster results.
The Reality Of Natural Language Learning For Adults
Let me be clear: unconscious language learning through immersion is absolutely effective. If you can replicate the conditions that allow for natural acquisition, it's probably the most enjoyable and stress-free way to learn a language.
However, for the vast majority of adult learners, these ideal conditions simply aren't available. They need a more structured approach that makes the best use of their limited time and leverages their natural adult abilities.
This doesn't mean abandoning listening, reading, and exposure to the language. These remain crucial elements of language learning. But for most adults, they need to be combined with deliberate study and practice to be truly effective.
Finding Your Balance: Practical Takeaways

So where does this leave you as a language learner? Here are the key insights to take away:
If you have ideal conditions for unconscious language learning:
Extensive exposure to the language in your daily life
Plenty of time to dedicate to the language
No urgent timeline for fluency
Access to native speakers and authentic materials
Then by all means, embrace natural acquisition. Surround yourself with the language, consume content you enjoy, and let your brain do the work.
If you're a typical adult learner:
Use your analytical skills and study systematically
Choose materials slightly above your current level (i+1)
Combine structured learning with extensive exposure
Don't feel guilty about studying grammar and vocabulary deliberately
Some conscious effort now can save you years later
For everyone:
Be aware of the “monitoring” effect that can disrupt fluency
Practice switching between analytical and intuitive modes
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good
Remember that there are multiple paths to language mastery
Unconscious Language Learning FAQ
Can you unconsciously learn a language?
Yes, you can unconsciously learn parts of a language, especially through immersion and exposure. Listening, reading, and interacting regularly help your brain absorb patterns without focused study.
What is an example of unconscious learning?
An example of unconscious learning is picking up slang or pronunciation just by listening to native speakers, without actively memorising rules. Children learning their first language is also a form of unconscious learning.
Unconscious Language Learning: Wrapping It Up
The truth is, there's no single “best” way to learn a language that works for everyone. Your approach should match your circumstances, goals, and natural learning style.
Some people thrive with unconscious acquisition, others need structured study, and many benefit from a combination of both approaches.
What matters most is finding a method that you can sustain consistently over time. Whether that's through natural immersion or deliberate practice, consistency and engagement with the language are what ultimately lead to fluency.
