If you’re learning Korean here on the StoryLearning Korean blog, then you might be wondering where else you can practice your Korean reading skills!
Blogs are a great way of doing this, as they tend to be written in a way that makes them easy to understand for all types of learners.
Not only do blogs help brush up your language skills, but you can also learn more about Korean culture.
In this post you're going to discover the 12 best Korean blogs for learners, both those for language learning (like the one you’re reading right now!), and blogs that teach you about Korean culture and customs.
Pro Tip
By the way, if you want to learn Korean fast and have fun while doing it, my top recommendation is Korean Uncovered which teaches you through my fun, unique and effective StoryLearning® method.
Let's start out with some of these, so buckle up, because there are a lot of great blogs out there. What’s more, these blogs are all written in English, so don’t worry if you’re a beginner learner.
1. FluentU
FluentU is a popular language learning site where you can learn multiple languages.
What’s interesting about their method is that they teach language (e.g., grammar points, vocabulary) using popular culture and media.
In the case of the FluentU Korean blog, this means you get to learn through K-pop and K-dramas! This can help contextualise the content you’re learning, and for this reason, Fluent U is perfect for fans of Korean pop culture.
They have posts on pretty much every aspect of Korean language learning, so you won’t be short of content! The blog posts are free to access.
2. 90 Day Korean
With a team of Koreans and Korean speakers, the 90 Day Korean blog has tonnes of helpful content for beginners and even advanced learners.
As the blog is focused entirely on the Korean language, you’ll be able to find an answer to pretty much any question you might have!
The content is diverse, and there’s even a post on how to learn Korean through literature such as poetry.
What’s more, 90 Day Korean has entire blog posts dedicated to specific words and phrases that are essential in everyday use.
You can learn about a lot more than just the Korean language on 90 Day Korean, as they also have posts on Korean folktales and other aspects of Korean culture and society.
3. Talk To Me In Korean
It would be practically impossible to talk about Korean blogs for learners without mentioning Talk to Me in Korean.
What’s particularly great about the content on their blog is that they delve into topics such as Korean slang, and how to respond in certain everyday situations.
There’s also advice on tricky words, and plenty of content for those that are looking to take the TOPIK test. There really is something for everyone here, even if your Korean is at the advanced level.
You can also find a lot of important cultural information, and there are blog posts that explore details of some words and phrases that are used in K-dramas and K-pop.
However, the blog content is not quite as extensive as their language learning content. Nevertheless, you can learn a lot of interesting information and tips from reading the blog.
4. Hangukdrama And Korean
If you’re self-studying Korean, it can always be helpful to have tips and resources from others who are doing the same.
Hangukdrama and Korean is a blog run by Shanna, a Singaporean who is self-studying Korean and Japanese.
Having taught herself to an advanced level of Korean, she uses her blog to share resources and methods that have worked for her and might work for others.
Besides language learning information, she also provides information on studying abroad in Korea, and of course, information about her favourite K-dramas!
What’s better, as you’re already here, you can easily check out other blog posts on the Korean language!
Korean Blogs For Learners About Korean Culture
Learning a language doesn’t begin and end with the language itself. You’re also learning an entirely new culture.
If you’re looking to travel to Korea or live there, then knowing information about how the country works is going to be especially important.
Without further ado, I'm going to introduce you to some English language blogs to familiarise yourself with Korean culture.
6. The Klog
There’s no doubting that Korean beauty is another aspect of Korean popular culture that has taken the world by storm.
If you want to know your ‘essence’ from your ‘serum’, then The Klog is the place for you.
Not only does The Klog explain the multitude of Korean skincare terms and ingredients, it also provides specific information on K-Beauty for your specific skin type and needs.
It also features interviews with K-Beauty experts and dermatologists, so if K-Beauty is your thing, look no further than The Klog!
7. Maangchi
This is one for the Korean foodies out there!
This blog features plenty of authentic Korean recipes for you to perfect your home-made Korean cooking skills.
If you’re craving a kimchi pancake or some bibimbap, Maangchi has all the recipes you need.
Run by a Korean woman, the recipes are easy to follow and it’s also a great way of learning the names for your favourite Korean food.
8. Seoul Beats
Attention K-pop lovers! If you’re looking for a solid English language blog on K-pop, look no further.
Seoul Beats has an incredible team who delve deep into discussion about all aspects of K-pop.
The writers on the site post content including roundups of new K-pop releases, discussion on K-dramas, and opinion pieces.
This site is especially great if you’re looking to get a little deeper into critical analysis of K-pop or K-dramas.
9. The Grand Narrative
The Grand Narrative is the perfect blog for those who are looking for more information about feminism, sexuality, and popular culture in Korea.
Definitely a blog for those who have more political interests.
The blog is very well researched, using plenty of different resources to provide insight into these topics.
These kind of aspects of Korean culture and society are rarely discussed in English language media. So this is a blog that you really should check out if you want to read about feminism or sexuality in Korea.
Korean Blogs For Learners Written In Korean
For those of you who have an intermediate or above level of Korean, you might want to seek out blogs that are written in Korean.
This can be challenging for beginner learners, as like in English, the language used online can be a bit different, as online writing in Korean tends to omit certain details.
That said, reading blogs in Korean is a great way to get familiar with these ways of writing, and is a fantastic way to learn new vocab.
10. Naver Blog
If you’re not already familiar with Naver, you should be!
Naver is one of the biggest companies in Korea and they are well established in the media industry.
Naver has a dedicated blog section where you can find blogs written in Korean on various topics, such as hobbies, games, Korean films, celebrities, and even cars! So, there’s something for everyone on Naver.
Naver also has one of the most efficient Korean-English online dictionaries out there, so if you get stuck, you can easily look up words by using their dictionary.
11. Daum
Daum is a great website to read up on a variety of different topics, be it sports, current affairs, news, or celebrities.
The site is fairly similar in navigation to Naver. And if you’re able to read Hangeul you’ll have no trouble navigating the site.
Daum also has a section of the site where you can use Kakao translate to translate any tricky content into English!
Daum is more of a news site than a blog, so the language used is a little more formal than some of the user-uploaded blogs you’ll find on Naver and Tistory.
But with so many different topics available, browsing Daum is a great way to improve your vocabulary.
12. Tistory
Tistory is not only the biggest blog site in Korea, but also one of the most popular websites in the country!
Owned by Kakao, you’ll need a KakaoTalk account to register on the site. But once you do, you’ll find no shortage of content to feast your eyes on!
As the site is so popular, you’re guaranteed a regular stream of content on pretty much any topic you desire.
Again, I recommend this to learners at intermediate/advanced levels, as reading blog posts in Korean requires more knowledge of online slang and different styles of writing that are used online.
Korean Blogs For Learners: Time To Learn By Reading
Well, that’s it for this list of Korean blogs for learners to discover more about Korean language and culture!
I know I’ve mostly featured English language blogs. But between Naver, Daum, and Tistory, you’ll find loads of blog content written in the Korean language.
Blogs can be a fantastic language learning tool as they help you develop your reading skills, a key part of the StoryLearning method.
And the more informal style of speech might also help you pick up some slang words.
What’s more, blogs are often easy to understand, and can be more accessible than textbooks for many people. They’re also free!
Don’t hesitate to check out the blogs from this list and kick start your Korean language learning journey.
