How To Learn Verb Conjugation Without The Stress

If you're learning a Romance language, you've probably hit the same wall that all learners face: verb conjugation. But how do you actually learn and use it right?

This question came from Ron, a Spanish learner in the US:

“I was curious if you had any tips on memorising conjugations – not just of different verbs, but when you start getting into past tense, future tense and things like that. Do you just take the time to memorise the conjugations and then practice with a speaker, or what's the best way to go about doing that?“

Let me share what I've learned from over 25 years of language learning, including what worked when I first started and what I'm doing differently now.

What I Did When I First Started Learning Languages

Back in 1999, when I was first learning French, I spent most of my time with grammar textbooks. I used to buy grammar practice books filled with pages of tests on different elements of grammar. I'd work through them religiously, trying to wrap my head around all the rules.

I also used to copy out complete verb tables over and over again from memory until I got them right. At the time, I didn't know any better.

Then I went to France, and through a process of speaking a lot, verb conjugations started to become normal and natural.

Here's something important I discovered: you don't need all the conjugations equally. In daily life, you'll find yourself using the first, second and third person singular (I, you, he/she) far more than forms like “they” or “we.” You'll also use certain verbs more than others.

Even now, after all these years, there are times when I come to conjugate a Spanish verb in an unusual form and I'm not quite sure how it works. That's completely fine. Once you've got the basics down, communication is taken care of.

Why Speaking Is Where The Real Learning Happens

The truth is, when I really learned verb conjugations – when they became automatic and accurate – it was after a long period of speaking.

When you speak, you get feedback. You realise whether people have understood what you've said. You also get to hear other people using these conjugations, and you just increase your confidence across the board.

A lot of this is about confidence. When you spend a lot of time with Spanish speakers and you hear them saying these verbs over and over again, you just know instinctively that it's right. The subjunctive is a classic example.

In French, je veux que tu fasses quelque chose (I want you to do something) uses the subjunctive. It wasn't something we were ever taught properly in school, but it sticks out like a sore thumb when you hear it enough times. You just get used to it.

A Different Approach: Input First, Grammar Later

With my more recent language projects, I've been trying something different. In the first month of learning, I focus on getting a lot of input – reading and listening – and I specifically avoid looking up grammar rules for the most part.

The idea behind this is that over the course of a month, you can learn a lot of this stuff naturally without needing to consult rule books. What I've found is that a lot of verbs, conjugations and different tenses start to sink in naturally.

When I think about how to conjugate certain verbs in the imperfect, future or even subjunctive, it's already gone into my brain in a fairly natural way. I can understand how these conjugations work when I hear them.

But here's the honest truth: there is a difference between being able to understand something and being able to say it.

You probably understand a lot of verbs when you hear them in Spanish and can recognise them, but when it comes to speaking, you get confused. It takes too long to think through those verb tables in your mind.

Bridge The Gap Between Understanding And Speaking

My approach involves several elements working together.

First, I make sure to keep up with listening and reading. Mastering different grammatical elements of a language is basically a consequence of exposure to them.

The only way you're going to master verb conjugations is by having a lot of exposure to them. That's the big picture.

Second, I know that when I start speaking, I'm going to make all kinds of mistakes with verb conjugations. There's going to be a lot that I don't know how to say.

So I use grammar practice books and do some drilling and testing. Sometimes when you see stuff explained to you on a piece of paper, that's enough to make it click.

Often it's not, but you have to go through a phase of looking at and practising these rules to bring them into your conscious mind.

Third, I make sure to get corrected by tutors so I know when I'm making mistakes.

Fourth – and this is crucial – I speak regularly. Having sessions every day, whether it's a lesson, a language exchange or even practising speaking by yourself, is when you start to sort conjugations out in your mind.

The Three Golden Rules For Mastering Verb Conjugations

Let me give you the big picture principles.

1. Get lots and lots of exposure. This means a lot of listening and reading. The trouble with listening is that sometimes the detail passes you by – you can understand a lot without necessarily being conscious of the specifics. Reading is what actually helps you focus on detail, for obvious reasons. You can see it there on the page. Focus on getting regular reading every day so you can see these verb conjugations in action.
2. Do lots of speaking. That's how you'll start to sort out verb conjugation in your brain. The interaction with people helps activate all this knowledge and turn passive understanding into active use.
3. Pay deliberate attention to the rules. Some focus on form – deliberate attention to the rules of conjugations – is helpful. Some deliberate practice and drills in the early stages can help hardwire this into your understanding of the language.

Why Exposure Matters More Than You Think

I see mastering verb conjugations mostly as a holistic thing, and where most people fail is because they're simply not getting enough exposure.

Someone once told me they were only getting 15 minutes a day of listening practice and thought that was enough. Of course, 15 minutes a day is better than nothing, and over time it adds up.

But if you're looking to truly master a language, you need to get more into your brain than that. Fifteen minutes over a 24-hour period isn't going to break the back of the language.

You need to make a conscious decision to increase the amount of input you're getting. That's what's going to help you dominate verb conjugation over time.

How To Actually Learn Verb Conjugation

Here's the reality: study helps to put verb conjugations on the map for you. You learn more or less how certain verbs inflect in different tenses. But that's only priming your brain.

It's really when you go out and start using these forms – talking with people – that the small number of really useful verbs and conjugations you need on a daily basis truly bed down.

Once you've got those and you're confident with them, the other verbs and conjugations will come naturally over time, as long as you keep listening and keep speaking with people.

Verb conjugations aren't something you conquer in a week or even a month. They're something that develops through consistent exposure, deliberate practice and real communication. Be patient with yourself, keep engaging with the language, and trust that it will come together.
