The Best AI Norwegian App: Reviewed By A Polyglot

Norwegian has not one, but two official written languages. Although I haven't learned it, that's exactly the kind of quirk that draws me to a language.

To put together this Norwegian AI app review, I tested each app myself with actual Norwegian-speaking friends.

Good for: learners who want a proper breakdown of their mistakes after every conversation

Ask Langua to switch you to Nynorsk instead of the Bokmål it defaults to, and it will, mid-conversation, no settings menu required.

Given how much of the rest of the Norwegian internet defaults to Bokmål and leaves you to figure out the difference yourself, that's a genuinely useful thing for an app to just do.

That's not the only reason my testers rated it highest, though. Every conversation ends with a written report of your mistakes. And for Norwegian that includes the tonal slips, the pitch that changes what word you've actually said, that most tools let pass unremarked.

You can type through Chat Mode or talk it out in Call Mode, and inside either there's a decent spread of formats: role-plays, open debate (one tester spent a session defending Knausgård's six-volume approach to autofiction, which says more about the tester than the app), straight vocabulary work, or free-form chat.

The voices come from real recordings rather than a synthesiser, so what you hear is the real rhythm of spoken Norwegian rather than a smoothed-out version of it.

2. TalkPal

Good for: learners who just want to get talking thanks to a low-friction option

Sign up and you're mid-conversation within a couple of minutes, no lengthy onboarding, just a choice of role-play, topic discussion, or an image to describe.

The catch shows up quickly, though. Compared to Langua, the voice is noticeably more synthetic, and my testers didn't have to think twice before spotting it.

There's also no memory built in: nothing saved, nothing carried between sessions, so each conversation starts exactly where the last one did, from nothing.

Pricing: $11.99 a month, cheaper on an annual plan. No full free trial, but a limited free tier lets you look around first.

3. ChatGPT

Good for: learners who don't mind doing the setup to get a free, build-it-yourself starting point

Ask ChatGPT to speak Norwegian and it will, easily.

Ask it to actually teach you Norwegian, and that's a different job it was never built for, so the syllabus is on you.

One thing it does well precisely because it's general-purpose: ask for Nynorsk instead of Bokmål and it switches without complaint, which only one of the purpose-built apps here manages as cleanly.

Where it struggles is memory and pacing. Pause mid-thought and it tends to assume you're finished and barges on, unhelpful when you're still hunting for the right ending on a compound word.

Nothing about a session carries into the next one, so you're re-explaining your level and your weak spots every single time you open it.

4. Teacher AI

Good for: intermediate and advanced learners who want to customise their speaking sessions

Norwegian's represented on Teacher AI by Skapago, whose videos you may recognise if you've searched for Norwegian lessons on YouTube before.

The app clones their voice and teaching style into something you can actually talk to on demand.

The whole appeal is customisation. Set your teacher's pace, dial their formality up or down, decide how quick they are to correct you, and how much English slack they'll cut you. Because it's built from a real person's voice rather than generated speech, the effect holds up.

It's not for absolute beginners, though: there's no course underneath the conversation, so if you don't already have something to say in Norwegian, it's not the app for you.

The Duolingo Gap

With 1.55 million people on Duolingo's Norwegian course, it's clearly doing something right.

As a starting point it gives you Norwegian vocabulary, structure and the daily nudge to keep going.

Speaking to it is a different story. The Video Call and Roleplay features that let you hold an AI conversation inside Duolingo haven't reached Norwegian yet; they're currently limited to a small set of the platform's biggest languages.

So it's worth keeping for the habit. Just don't expect it to be where you practise actually talking.
