The Harsh Truth About Advanced Fluency

Can you achieve C2 level in a language? And how long will it take?

These are questions I get asked regularly, and I understand the impulse behind them. Advanced fluency feels like the ultimate badge of honour in language learning.

Yes, you can reach C2 level as an adult learner. The real question is whether it's worth it.

I don't aim for C2 in any of the languages I've learned. I don't believe I'm at C2 in any of them, and I don't think I ever have been.

I'm also quite sceptical of people who claim they're at C2 level. I've heard people talk about passing C2 exams, but their speaking ability is so far off genuine C2 that it's not even funny.

What Does C2 Level Actually Mean?

For those unfamiliar with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), this is the grading system used in Europe for language proficiency.

The levels progress from A1 and A2 (beginner), through B1 and B2 (intermediate), up to C1 and C2 (advanced). C2 is the pinnacle – it means you've essentially mastered the language.

To put this in perspective, C2 is equivalent to an 8.5 or 9 on the IELTS exam. If you know IELTS, (I do, from my time in the ESL industry) you'll know that's incredibly difficult.

But what does advanced fluency at this level actually look like in practice? According to the CEFR descriptors, C2 means you can:

• Understand with ease virtually everything heard or read
• Summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation
• Express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in complex situations

Think about what that first point alone requires. In any scenario you find yourself in – any conversation, any text, any broadcast – nothing trips you up.

When you imagine all the different situations you could encounter in a country where the language is spoken natively, being able to understand virtually everything with ease is an extraordinarily high bar.

Does Every Native Speaker Reach C2?

Here's something interesting that came up when I was training to be an IELTS examiner. The instructor asked us whether we thought every English native speaker would qualify as C1 or C2 level.

Then they played us examples of native speakers who weren't particularly educated or well-spoken.

Could these people summarise information, reconstruct arguments in a coherent presentation, express themselves precisely while differentiating fine shades of meaning?

Not at all.

This is the funny thing about advanced fluency – not every native speaker of a language can actually meet these criteria. They might be native speakers, but they can still be incoherent, make mistakes, or lack the ability to manipulate language at this sophisticated level.

The point is that C2 represents a very, very high standard that even some native speakers don't reach.

How Long Does It Take To Achieve Advanced Fluency?

My friend Anthony once described the progression through language levels in a way that's stuck with me: every level takes twice as long as the last one did.

Let's work through this. If A1 took you three months of daily study, then:

• A2 would take six months
• B1 would take twelve months
• B2 would take twenty-four months (two years)
• C1 would take four years
• C2 would take eight years

I think this is largely accurate, even if we wish it weren't. If you want to go from day one in a language to genuine C2, you're looking at well over ten years – probably more like fifteen or twenty until you're really, truly there.

Who Actually Reaches C2 Level?

When I think about foreigners I encounter who speak English at C2 level, there's actually quite a lot of them – but they all share something in common.

Living in the UK, I regularly interact with people from different countries who have learned English as a second language and are essentially at native speaker level. These might be doctors working in the NHS, professionals in various companies, or academics.

The typical profile? Someone who came to the UK at eighteen to go to university, spent three or four years studying, then stayed. They married an English person, work in an English company, and now they're forty-two – twenty years later – with English that's absolutely spot on.

That's the kind of situation we're talking about. And it's actually quite common because plenty of people meet these criteria.

I also know academics who have a wider vocabulary than I do in English, simply because they spend all their time dealing with complex written language in ways I don't.

Meanwhile, I spend my time communicating on the internet, where simpler language actually works better.

Can You Study Your Way To C2?

Yes, you can – but not through study alone. You would have to live your way there.

The thing about advanced fluency is that the higher up you get, the rarer the language becomes.

Complex grammatical constructions, very rare vocabulary, specific domains of expertise – you might only come across certain expressions or vocabulary items once a year or once every two years because they're that uncommon.

This makes it incredibly difficult to study your way through in a normal way. You can try to memorise rare vocabulary, but you'll forget it because you won't encounter it again until 2035.

To reach C2, you obviously need to start with studying to learn the language, but then you need to actually make your life in that language.

This could mean moving to the country, having a partner who speaks the language natively and isn't interested in learning yours, or working in a job where all your colleagues speak that language.

Eventually, through spending all day, every day of your life and career surrounded by the language, you will pick it up. But it's going to take real time.

Is Advanced Fluency Worth Pursuing?

I understand the impulse to aim for C2. It's like a badge of honour – similar to owning your own home, becoming a millionaire, or visiting every country in the world. These are things people feel they want to achieve, often through societal pressure or the influence of what they see online.

But if you think about the actual benefits of C2, I'm really not convinced there are many – assuming you're not already making your life in that language.

If you're married to someone who speaks another language, or if you live in a country where that language is spoken, then I absolutely commend the desire to learn it to a really high level. But absent that kind of immersive situation, I'm not sure it makes much sense.

In your day-to-day life, you don't need C2 at all. At B2 level (fluent in my book) – which according to our earlier calculations saves you a full twelve years compared to C2 – you can already live your life perfectly well in that language.

When I think about the foreigners I meet in London, the majority are speaking at somewhere around B1 or B2 level.

I have plenty of friends who speak at that level, and it's absolutely fine. I don't need them to be any higher. It simply doesn't matter for almost anything you're going to do in your life.

The Game Of Diminishing Returns

Language learning at a certain point becomes a game of diminishing returns. It takes so long and it's so hard that you've got to ask yourself: what else could I be doing with my life?

Those twelve years it's going to take you to get from B2 to C2? You could learn five other languages. You could start a business. You could travel the world. There's a lot of stuff to do in life.

If reaching C2 is really worth the extra work for you, you'll already know it. You'll already have that strong reason driving you.

If you don't, may I humbly suggest that you simply don't worry about it? Focus instead on enjoying your life with that language at the centre, without feeling pressure to reach a level just because it exists.

The moon exists, and people have gone there. But most of us are relatively happy not going to the moon.

What To Take Away From This

Advanced fluency at C2 level is absolutely achievable as an adult learner, but it requires a realistic understanding of what's involved:

• Reaching C2 typically takes fifteen to twenty years of sustained engagement with a language
• Study alone won't get you there – you need to make your life in the language through immersion, relationships, or career
• B2 level is sufficient for virtually everything you'll want to do in a language, saving you roughly twelve years of effort
• The people who genuinely reach C2 are those who have spent decades living, working and building relationships in the language
• If you don't already have a compelling reason to pursue C2, that's a sign it may not be the right language learning goal for you

Rather than chasing an arbitrary level, consider what you actually want from your language learning.

What experiences do you want to have? What connections do you want to make?

For most learners, those goals are entirely achievable at intermediate or upper-intermediate level – leaving you free to enjoy the language without the pressure of an impossibly distant target.
