How To Improve Writing In A Foreign Language

A listener named Thomas, from Poland, sent me a question I don't think I've ever addressed on the blog before. He's learning English and wants to know: how to improve writing in a foreign language on your own, without a teacher?

He even came with ideas — uploading his writing to a language exchange site, and trying a technique where he translates texts back and forth between English and Polish. Good ideas, as it turns out.

In this post, I want to walk through three methods that I think genuinely work when it comes to how to improve writing in a foreign language.

Can You Improve Your Writing Without A Teacher?

The short answer is yes — absolutely. Writing is a skill that doesn't get talked about as much as speaking or listening, which is a bit odd, really, because for a lot of language learners it's hugely important.

If you're learning English for professional reasons, for instance, you might spend more of your working day writing emails and reports than you ever do speaking. So it deserves proper attention.

The central challenge with writing, though, is feedback. When you speak with someone, you get an immediate response — you can tell whether you've been understood, whether you've said something oddly, whether the conversation is flowing.

With writing, you produce something and then … nothing. You don't know if what you've written is correct. That's the problem to solve, and the three methods below are all different ways of solving it.

Use A Language Exchange Site To Get Real Corrections

The first method Thomas mentioned — and one I've used myself — is writing on a platform like LangCorrect (or the now-classic Lang-8), where native speakers will come in and correct what you've written. It's a genuinely fantastic resource.

You write something in your target language, and real people — native speakers — give you corrections and feedback for free.

I'll be honest: the trap I've always fallen into with sites like this is consistency. It's very easy to write something once, get your corrections, glance at them, and then never go back. The internet is full of distractions, and your attention drifts.

So if you're going to use a language exchange site for writing practice, build it into a regular routine. One good approach is to keep a daily diary — nothing elaborate, just a paragraph or two about your day, written before bed each evening. The regularity matters enormously.

And when you do get corrections back, don't just skim them. Take the time to understand what was wrong, make a note of it, and then write something new that deliberately uses the corrected form. Feedback is only valuable if you do something with it.

What Is Reverse Translation?

The second technique Thomas suggested is one I've written about at length elsewhere, and it's called reverse translation.

Here's how it works: you take a text in your target language, translate it into your mother tongue, then hide the original and translate your version back into the target language. Finally, you compare your translation with the original.

In Thomas's case, that would mean finding an English article, translating it into Polish, setting the English aside, and then translating the Polish back into English. When you compare your English version with the original, the gaps become very clear, very quickly.

I'll warn you: this method is tough. It's not just difficult — it's quite brutal, because it shows you every single place where your command of the language falls short. But that's also what makes it so effective. It's a form of self-generated feedback, and it's surprisingly rigorous.

Again, what you do with the results matters as much as the exercise itself. Don't just note the differences and move on. Analyse where you went wrong, write things down and, if you can, do the same translation two or three more times until the correct version feels natural.

Repetition is how things stick.

Using Exam Preparation Books For Writing Practice

The third method is one you might not have considered: exam preparation books. For English in particular, there are some exceptional books written for exams like IELTS and TOEFL that include structured writing exercises — and crucially, model answers.

The way to use them is simple. The book gives you a topic, perhaps with some relevant vocabulary, and you write a short essay or response on that topic. Then you turn to the back of the book and compare what you've written with the model answer.

You're not just looking at vocabulary and grammar — you're looking at structure:

• How did they open the essay?
• How did they develop the argument?
• How did they bring it to a close?

This is a brilliant way to grow your vocabulary in areas that matter — real, topic-relevant language — while also learning how good writing is put together at a structural level. Even if you're not planning to sit an exam, these books are worth having on your shelf.

The Most Important Thing Is What You Do With Feedback

What all three of these methods for how to improve writing in a foreign language have in common is that they provide some form of feedback — corrections from native speakers, comparison with an original text, comparison with a model answer.

And what they all require, equally, is that you actually engage with that feedback rather than glance at it and move on.

This is the bit that most people skip. It's human nature — getting the correction feels like the achievement, and acting on it feels like homework.

But the writing doesn't improve in the moment you receive the feedback – it improves in the moment you do something with it:

• Make notes.
• Redo the exercise.
• Write a new piece that uses the corrected language.

That's where the progress actually happens.

Knowing how to improve writing in a foreign language comes down to one thing above all else: getting words on the page regularly, and finding honest ways to measure how well you're doing.

Thomas already had two of the three methods in this post figured out before he even asked the question, which tells me he's already thinking the right way.

Whether you use a language exchange site, reverse translation or exam preparation books — or all three — the principle is the same. Write consistently, seek feedback and do something with what you learn.

There's no mystery to how to improve writing in a foreign language, and there's no shortcut. But there is a very clear path, and you just have to start walking it.
