Is A Language Learning Community The Ultimate Study Hack?
by Olly Richards
Looking back over a decade later, I can pinpoint the exact moment my relationship with languages shifted from something I did alone to something that became woven into my social life.
It happened in Berlin, at the Polyglot Gathering, and the lessons I learned there have stayed with me ever since.
I want to share this story with you because I think it holds something important about a language learning community – something that might just transform your own language learning journey.
Pro Tip
By the way, if you’re serious about improving your language skills, online language courses for fluency can make a huge difference.
I'm offering top-rated online language courses for beginners to advanced learners, covering Mandarin, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese and more.

What Happens When Language Lovers Get Together?
At the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin, way back when
The Polyglot Gathering is a kind of conference filled with people who love languages. Most attendees speak several languages, though not everyone does.
There are talks, workshops and plenty of conversations in corridors. When you arrive, you get a badge where you write your name and stick on flags representing the languages you speak.
This badge system creates an interesting dynamic. People wander around examining each other's badges, and it becomes a natural starting point for conversation. “Oh, you speak Cantonese? Let me try!”
Someone might just jump out and start speaking to you in a language you weren't expecting.
It can be a bit overwhelming, honestly. Switching between different languages on the fly is genuinely hard, and when you're surrounded by hundreds of language enthusiasts, it's not exactly relaxing.
This isn't really what I learn languages for – I don't learn them to go around speaking loads of them simultaneously with different people.
But something else happened at that gathering. Something far more meaningful.
The Connections That Actually Matter
Out of every hundred people you meet, there's usually one person you really connect with. At the Polyglot Gathering, with hundreds of attendees, I found those few people – and those connections rekindled my passion for certain languages in ways I hadn't expected.
One evening, I met Maria from Poland. She told me she'd been listening to one of my podcast episodes where I'd talked about setting audacious language goals.
I'd argued that if you really want to make a big impact in your learning, you can't just sit behind a desk reading your book every day. You have to bring yourself out of your comfort zone and do something different.
Meeting Maria reminded me of my own advice. And over the following days, I started to experience exactly what I'd been preaching.
A 2am Conversation That Changed My Perspective
This is not Jan, neither is it the guy I spoke to in French
My good friend Jan was staying with me during the gathering. One evening, around 1 or 2am, we were heading back to my flat when we spotted someone Jan recognised outside a bar next door. We sat down with this guy from Paris who didn't speak much English.
What followed was a two-hour conversation entirely in French.
Here's the thing: French is a language I hadn't really used much in the previous ten years. I simply hadn't had any French friends, so the language had been slowly fading.
Yet there I was, in the middle of Berlin at 2am, having this deep, genuine conversation about politics, immigration, languages and Europe.
We were really communicating. Really bonding. When we finally got up to leave, I turned to Jan and said, “That was amazing.”
It was the first time in about fifteen years that I'd spoken French for more than five minutes. And it happened because I'd put myself in an environment where these kinds of encounters become possible.
Language Learning Community Creates Opportunities
The next day, I sat down with someone at the venue and had a long conversation in Portuguese – discussing business, languages and all kinds of things. Again, it was the first extended Portuguese conversation I'd had in ages.
None of this would have happened if I'd stayed at home in London.
I wasn't particularly looking for a long conversation in French that night. I wasn't seeking out Portuguese practice. These moments happened because I'd gone to Berlin, into this gathering, and surrounded myself with a language learning community.
This is the power of community that's hard to explain until you experience it. When you're around like-minded people who share your interests, they:
introduce you to new connections
help you have stimulating conversations
help you become a better thinker about whatever you're trying to do
How Can You Find Your Own Language Learning Community?
I imagine many of you are learning your language somewhat in isolation. Perhaps you haven't travelled to the country where it's spoken.
Maybe you don't have a circle of friends who share your interest. You might be listening to podcasts and working through textbooks alone in your room.
If that sounds familiar, I want to encourage you to do something that puts you out of your comfort zone. Something a bit crazy. Something big.
I don't know exactly what that will look like for you, but here are some ideas:
Wherever you live, there are almost certainly local events you could attend. Go to Meetup.com and search for language meetups.
If you're learning Polish, search for Polish meetups
If you're learning Portuguese, look for Brazilian cultural events or concerts
If you're learning Arabic, consider volunteering with a local refugee organisation
The key is to find a community of people who are into either language learning in general or the specific language you're studying. Search for what's available. Put yourself out there. Take a couple of risks.
The Galvanising Force Of Shared Passion
When I think back to that week in Berlin, what strikes me most isn't the languages I spoke – though those conversations were wonderful. It's how being part of a language learning community rekindled something in me that had been dormant.
Finding your people in language learning isn't just about getting more practice, though that's certainly part of it.
It's about surrounding yourself with others who understand why you spend hours studying grammar or why you get excited about a new vocabulary word.
It's about discovering that your passion isn't strange or solitary – it's shared by thousands of people around the world who would love to connect with you.
If you've been learning in isolation, I'd encourage you to take that first step towards finding your community.
Whether it's attending a local meetup, joining an online group or even travelling to a language event, these connections have the potential to transform not just your language skills but your entire relationship with learning.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your progress is simply to stop going it alone.
