Is There A Perfect Language Learning Environment?

A reader named Sonia recently wrote to me with a question I suspect a lot of people quietly ask themselves.

She’s from China and had been chasing what she believed was the ideal way to learn: get a basic foundation in a language, then immerse yourself in a native-speaking environment.

This year she moved to Nantes, France — for a master’s degree, deliberately choosing somewhere smaller than Paris so she’d hear French all day.

And yet she’s struggling. She can’t follow the rapid back-and-forth between native speakers, finds it almost impossible to interrupt and still has very few French friends.

So here’s her question: am I wrong? Is immersion not the best language learning environment after all? It’s an honest, vulnerable question, and the answer matters more than it first appears. So let me work through it.

Why Having No Local Friends Abroad Is Completely Normal

The first thing I want to say to Sonia — and to anyone in the same boat — is that there is nothing strange about living abroad and not having many local friends. It’s not just common; it’s to be expected.

I’ve met countless people who’ve lived in another country for years without making a single close friend among the native population.

Or if they do have local friends, those friends tend to be the ones who already speak excellent English and want the practice — which means the friendship ends up happening in English anyway.

Think of the curse of the English speaker: an English person can move to Japan and find it perfectly possible to have no Japanese friends at all, simply because so many people want to speak English with them instead.

So Sonia, please don’t read your situation as a personal failure. You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re just bumping into the reality of real life.

Is There Really A Best Language Learning Environment?

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: there’s no such thing as the single ideal or perfect language learning environment.

A lot of us fall in love with languages because of one magical moment. For me, that moment came at nineteen, working in a café in London where all my colleagues were from different countries — France, Sweden, Italy and Spain.

I remember thinking how amazing it would be to speak to each of them in their own language. That was the spark.

After that, I had a couple of genuinely brilliant situations that let me learn quickly. In France, I had a French girlfriend who helped me learn French. Back in London, one of my closest friends was Spanish and his English was poor, so we muddled along in Spanish and my level shot up.

If you’re looking for something close to an ideal setup, that’s it: a close personal relationship (dating someone who speaks a different language for instance) that happens to take place in your target language. That’s about as good as it gets.

But step outside that dreamlike scenario and you meet the real world. When I was in Hong Kong several years ago, I loved it — but learning Cantonese there is genuinely hard, because most educated people are effectively bilingual in English and have little reason to slow down for a beginner.

And when I lived in Japan, I was lonely and isolated, I didn’t feel like studying, so I didn’t, and my progress stalled. The language learning environment was theoretically excellent. My experience of it was not.

How Your Feelings Shape The Way You Learn

This brings me to something I think Sonia, as a fellow analytical type, will recognise. It’s tempting to reason your way to a conclusion like this: complete immersion is objectively the most efficient method, therefore I should immerse myself and I’ll learn fast.

On paper, that’s sound. In practice, it only holds if you’re actually happy in that language learning environment.

In language teaching, we talk about affective factors — the emotional side of learning, how at ease and comfortable you feel. Any teacher will tell you that students learn far better when they’re relaxed and happy, both with their teacher and with the people around them.

Your feelings aren’t a footnote to the process; they’re central to it. You can make huge progress studying in your own bedroom if that’s what suits you, and you can stall completely in the “perfect” language learning environment if it leaves you anxious and withdrawn.

There’s one more piece of honesty Sonia needs to hear: part of the difficulty is simply that her French isn’t strong enough yet. And the key word there is yet. That’s not a criticism — it’s just where she is, and it will change with time and work.

Native speakers, meanwhile, generally won’t slow down to become what we’d call sympathetic listeners. They’re busy, they have their own lives, and most of them aren’t especially interested in making conversation easier for a learner.

That sounds harsh, but it isn’t personal. It’s just people being people.

Does Total Immersion Suit Everyone?

No — and this is where personality comes in. I’ve known extroverts who move abroad with shaky language skills and simply throw themselves into conversation without a second thought.

They don’t care about making mistakes, they don’t worry what anyone thinks, and they tend to learn very quickly precisely because of that fearlessness.

I’m not like that. And Sonia, reading between the lines of your message, I don’t think you are either. Some of us much prefer to build a comfortable, controlled environment where we can learn at our own pace.

Neither temperament is better or worse — but they call for completely different strategies. Forcing a more reserved learner into a sink-or-swim immersion and expecting it to “just work” is a recipe for exactly the kind of frustration Sonia is feeling.

Is This The Best Way, Or The Best Way For You?

So the question to ask is not “Is this the best way to learn a language?” It’s “Is this the best way for me?” Only you can answer that.

I don’t know how committed Sonia is to staying in France, and I wouldn’t presume to decide that for her.

But here’s what I’d gently encourage: as you look ahead over the coming weeks, months and years, don’t be afraid to follow the path that makes you happier.

Life is about far more than language learning, and — this is the part people underestimate — the happier you are, the better your language learning tends to go as a direct result. Misery is not a study technique.

How To Get The Speaking Practice You Need

If I were in Sonia’s shoes, here’s the practical move I’d make. First, accept that interacting socially is genuinely hard right now — partly on a cultural level, but definitely on a language level — and stop treating that as a sign you’ve failed.

Then get yourself some dedicated speaking practice. Find a language partner locally, or hire a tutor on a platform like LanguaTalk for regular one-to-one sessions.

Right now what you need most is structured speaking time to rebuild your confidence, and you can’t always rely on the fast-moving group conversations around you to provide it.

It might feel almost perverse to pay someone to speak French with you when you’re already living in France — but in your situation, I think it could be the smartest thing you do.

Build your confidence in a setting that feels safe, and the everyday conversations will gradually start to open up.

The Right Language Learning Environment Fits Your Life

If there’s one thing I’d want Sonia, and you, to take from all this, it’s that chasing the perfect language learning environment is something of a trap.

There is no single setting that works for everyone, because what makes an environment work isn’t whether it looks optimal on paper — it’s whether you feel comfortable, motivated and happy inside it.

Immersion is wonderful for some people and quietly miserable for others. A tutor on a screen can outperform a whole city of native speakers if it’s the thing that finally gets you talking.

The real skill in language learning isn’t finding the textbook-perfect environment and gritting your teeth through it; it’s honestly asking how a language fits into the life you actually want to live, and then shaping your learning around that answer.

Stay kind to yourself, get the speaking practice you need in a way that suits your temperament, and trust that as your confidence grows, everything else will follow. The best environment, in the end, is simply the one you can flourish in.
