What’s The Best Italian AI App? A Linguist’s Verdict
by Olly Richards
Can a piece of software really get your Italian up to speed — or is that just marketing talk? The reality: some apps can, and some can't, and the gap between the two is enormous.
I'm a linguist and Italian is one of my languages. I've tried out 6 apps in my quest to find the best Italian AI app.
I've talked to each one the way I'd talk to a real tutor, pushing them on feedback, and watching closely for the moment they fall over. (They usually do.)
What follows is the shortlist I'd actually hand a friend learning Italian — ordered by how much use I reckon you'll get out of each one. Let's get into my guide to the best AI for learning Italian.
Pro Tip
By the way, if you want to learn Italian fast, my top recommendation is Italian Uncovered which teaches you through StoryLearning®.
With Italian Uncovered you’ll use my unique StoryLearning® method to learn Italian naturally through story… not rules. It’s as fun as it is effective.
Who it's for: committed learners who want real feedback after every single conversation
Let me not bury the lede: Langua is the AI Italian app I reach for most, and the first one I'd steer a serious learner towards.
The reason is simple. Most of these tools hand you a chatbot and stop there. Langua behaves like it actually knows you're trying to learn something.
You get two ways in — Chat Mode, which is text-based, and Call Mode, which is hands-free and feels like ringing up an Italian mate.
Inside either, there's a proper spread of exercises to choose from: role-plays, debates on whatever you're into, vocabulary work, plain free chat. Whatever you happen to be in the mood to practise that day.
The voices are a cut above, too. They're cloned from actual native speakers — a few recognisable Italian YouTubers among them — rather than cooked up by a synthesiser, and you can hear it.
The musicality of Italian, the way syllables run into one another, the gentle sing-song of certain regions: it all survives.
But the part that wins me over is what arrives once you've hung up. You get a written breakdown of where you slipped, and then the app builds grammar drills around your own mistakes.
So if you keep botching the congiuntivo — and who doesn't — that's exactly what lands in front of you next. You can also set how it pulls you up in the moment: bluntly, gently, in writing, out loud. Whatever doesn't knock you off your stride.
A small touch I love as a learner: when the Italian word point-blank refuses to come, you can drop into English and the AI rolls with it. Sounds trivial. It's the opposite — it's the line between a useful half hour and ten minutes of teeth-grinding.
There's more than conversation here, as well. Langua also packs in podcasts and videos with interactive transcripts, AI-built stories that recycle the words you've saved, and spaced-repetition flashcards.
So if juggling five separate apps for input, vocab and speaking makes you tired just thinking about it, this folds most of it into one place.
Like every AI tool, the transcription mishears you now and then — but Langua lets you swap between the leading transcription models until one clicks with your accent.
Pricing: $12–$29/month. Free account available, plus a 7-day free trial of Pro.
Who it's for: a free, do-it-yourself starting point, if you don't mind building the scaffolding
ChatGPT hardly needs me to introduce it. And yes — it'll happily practise Italian with you.
But I want to tread carefully here, because people love to file ChatGPT alongside the purpose-built apps, and that comparison doesn't really stand up.
ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI that happens to speak lovely Italian. It was never built to teach a language, and using it as a teacher means doing the lesson-planning yourself.
That said — if you're game to put the work in, it does the job. Voice mode is startlingly natural, and it lets you cut in mid-sentence, which feels far closer to a real exchange than the wooden turn-taking of older tools.
The snag? Pause for a beat or two to think, and it'll often barge straight back in, assuming you've finished. For a learner groping for the right word, that's maddening.
The bigger gap is the total lack of structure. No set topics, no vocab list it holds onto, no grammar log, no review schedule. Every session starts from nothing.
You can tell it to correct your Italian — but you've got to remember to ask, every single time, and most people quietly drop that habit within a week.
There's also no way to pin it to a particular variety of Italian. Left to its own devices it drifts towards a fairly neutral, standard register. If you're specifically after Sicilian, Neapolitan, or another regional flavour, that's a meaningful limitation.
Pricing: Free (with limits), or $20/month for ChatGPT Plus.
3. Duolingo
Who it's for: keeping the habit alive, one day at a time
Duolingo needs no sales pitch from me — it's the app nearly everyone has either used or felt a touch guilty about abandoning.
In 2024 it added two AI features worth a mention: Video Call (a natter with the mascot, Lily) and Adventures (interactive, scenario-style simulations). Both started life behind the Max tier, though that's been loosening up.
Here's the straight version. For sheer consistency, nothing else on this list comes close to Duolingo.
The streaks, the little rewards, the dopamine drip — they work, and turning up regularly is honestly the thing that separates the people who learn a language from the people who don't.
But if your real aim is to speak Italian, the AI bits feel bolted onto a product designed for something else.
The conversations are tighter, less lifelike and less corrective than what a dedicated tool like Langua gives you. Treat them as a pleasant extra, not your main speaking practice.
Pricing: Duolingo Super is around $20/month; Max is $30/month.
4. Speak
Who it's for: total beginners who want something they can simply open and follow
Speak is a slick app, and you can tell real product thinking has gone into it.
The onboarding is painless, the Italian voices sound good, and the early lessons march you through everyday situations in a sensible order: greetings, ordering a coffee, asking directions, making small talk on the train.
If you're right at the start of your Italian and the prospect of “just go and practise” feels paralysing, Speak gives you a path to walk. That has genuine value.
The trouble shows a few months in. Feedback stays fairly shallow — you'll see when something's marked wrong, but the why often goes unexplained.
The content doesn't stretch well into intermediate territory either; the lessons start to blur into one another. And there's no spaced repetition for vocabulary, which for a language as lexically rich as Italian is a real omission.
Pricing: Varies by country, with the Premium Plus tier (unlimited custom lessons) noticeably pricier than the base. The tier structure is a bit of a labyrinth.
5. TalkPal
Who it's for: a low-friction option when you just want to get chatting
TalkPal was built specifically for language learners, and Italian is well covered.
You're up and running in about a minute, and there's a fair range of formats: role-plays, topic discussions, image-based prompts.
In practice, though, it feels a notch more basic than the front-runners. The voice quality is more synthetic than Langua's or Speak's — there's no mistaking it for a person.
There's no vocabulary saving, no flashcards, no memory of the Italian grammar you fluffed last time. So whatever you pick up in one conversation doesn't really feed into the next.
One thing that genuinely got a laugh out of me during testing: the prompts can be wildly out of step with the level.
On a fairly modest setting, one opener cheerfully invited me to argue the merits of capitalism versus socialism. In Italian. That's a tall order in your mother tongue.
Pricing: $11.99/month (cheaper annually). No proper free trial, but there's a limited free tier so you can have a poke around before paying.
6. Teacher AI
Who it's for: intermediate and advanced learners who want to fine-tune the experience
Teacher AI covers 30 languages, and Italian is one of the better-served ones.
What marks it out is how much you can adjust. You pick from a roster of AI Italian teachers, each with their own personality and back-story, then dial in their speaking speed, their level of formality, how often they correct you, and how much English they're allowed to fall back on.
Like Langua, the voices are cloned from real native speakers, so the audio lands as human rather than machine-made. If you know precisely what you're after — say, quick, informal Italian with corrections coming thick and fast — you can engineer that here.
A caveat, though: this isn't one for beginners. Without a conversational base underneath you, all that freedom to customise becomes a burden rather than a help.
But for intermediate or advanced learners who've outgrown the lesson-by-lesson apps and want a flexible partner to talk to, it's well worth a look.
Pricing: $15/month, or $97/year. Free trial available.
The Missing Piece: Reading
All of the apps above focus on conversation and drills. But there's one part of language learning that AI apps consistently overlook: reading.
Reading graded stories at your level is one of the most effective ways to build vocabulary, absorb grammar naturally, and develop real comprehension. It's the part of your routine that makes everything else click faster.
The StoryLearning App is built specifically for this. It gives you short stories graded to your level in Italian, with built-in vocabulary support and spaced repetition.
Fifteen minutes a day of reading alongside your speaking practice will move you further than either one alone.
Best Italian AI App FAQ
What Is The Best AI App For Italian?
The best AI app for Italian is Langua, from LanguaTalk. It offers Italian alongside plenty of other languages.
With Langua you get Italian conversations designed to build fluency: role-plays, debates, vocabulary practice and more, with a human-sounding AI you choose yourself. Feedback lands instantly from your Italian conversation partner.
You can also save new words from the chat and learn them through AI-generated stories and flashcards.
Stuck for a word? Ask in your own language and it keeps up. Lost for what to say? One tap and Langua suggests a few Italian replies.
If you want to work on your reading skills in Italian, the StoryLearning app lets you read short stories at your level, with built-in vocabulary support and spaced repetition.
Can I Use AI To Help Me Learn Italian?
You can, yes. Here are ten ways to put AI to work on your Italian.
1. Get the chatbot to talk to you in Italian — it builds fluency, feeds you new words, sharpens your listening, and hands back feedback (depending on the tool – some you'll have to prompt). 2. Have AI role-play the situations you'll actually face — ordering at a trattoria, sorting out a train ticket, that sort of thing. 3. Ask for feedback on your Italian writing to tidy up both grammar and vocabulary. 4. Prompt it to write stories at your level on topics you care about, to read or listen to (or both). 5. Get it to draw up lists of Italian vocabulary around a specific subject. 6. Ask it to untangle words that look alike — say, sapere and conoscere, which both come out as “to know” in English. 7. Have it explain grammar, with examples, for whatever's tripping you up. 8. Generate Italian vocab and grammar exercises and tests. 9. Get it to build practice papers for exams like the CILS or CELI. 10. Ask it for other Italian resources, or areas you ought to work on.
Can I Use ChatGPT To Learn Italian?
Absolutely. ChatGPT is a handy tool for learning Italian. It'll translate, reel off relevant vocabulary, and even hold up its end of a conversation.
You can also lean on AI to generate grammar or vocabulary drills, and to prepare for Italian exams like the CILS.
A word of warning through, as it's not a dedicated AI Italian tutor designed to teach the language you'll have to prompt it to give you feedback. You'll also have do create the structure yourself as it doesn't offer a structured programme to learn Italian with AI.
Are There Free AI Bots To Practice Conversational Italian?
Yes, there are several free AI tools that can help you practise conversational Italian.
These chatbots allow you to have written or spoken conversations, ask questions, and receive corrections without needing a human language partner.
Some popular options include:
– ChatGPT – Can hold conversations in Italian, explain grammar, and adapt to your level. – Microsoft Copilot – Offers conversational practice and language support. – Google Gemini – Can chat in Italian and help with vocabulary and corrections. – Talkpal – Designed specifically for language practice, with a free tier. – Character.AI – Includes Italian-speaking characters and conversation partners.
AI conversation practice is useful for building confidence and vocabulary, but it works best when combined with listening to native speakers and real-world interaction.
Machines are patient conversation partners. They never get tired of hearing the same mistake twenty-seven times, which is one of the few areas where they clearly outperform humans.
My Verdict On The Best Italian AI App
Let's be honest about where we are. AI has transformed what an Italian learner can do from their own sofa.
Rewind a few years and daily speaking practice meant paying an Italian tutor or tracking down a language exchange — neither of them easy. That barrier is mostly gone now.
But there's a distinction worth holding onto: “AI for Italian” and “AI for learning Italian” aren't the same animal. The general-purpose tools — ChatGPT being the obvious one — turn out gorgeous Italian. What they won't do is teach it to you with any structure behind it.
If you want a tool built for the actual job — that logs your mistakes, grows your vocabulary out of your conversations, and gives you both speaking and listening practice in one place — Langua is where I'd send you. It's the only app on this list that nails all three.
And one last thing, which I'll never stop banging on about: AI is a supplement to real human conversation, not a stand-in for it. Use these tools to build the confidence and the reflexes you need between conversations with real Italian speakers, and both will pay off far more.
