Swedish isn't one of my eight languages, but I've failed that test enough times to respect it.

To review these AI apps for learning Swedish, I rounded up some Swedish-speaking friends to test each one alongside me.

For once, my Swedish-speaking testers didn't argue about the ranking.

ChatGPT will hold a perfectly fluent conversation in Swedish; that's not really in question.

Whether it can teach you Swedish is a separate matter, and the honest answer is only if you're willing to be your own curriculum designer.

Voice mode is genuinely its best feature, fluid enough to talk over like a real person. The habit that undoes it: the moment you go quiet to work out a vowel length, it assumes you're finished and carries on regardless.

Nothing about it persists, either. It won't recall your last session or hold onto a word you've saved, and it only corrects you if you think to ask, something most people stop bothering with after a few days.

3. Teacher AI

Built for: intermediate and advanced learners who want unlimited options

Teacher AI's pitch is the same for Swedish as for its 30-odd other languages: pick a teacher clone, then shape the session around you, faster or slower, stricter or more forgiving, with as much English as a crutch as you like, or none at all.

Because the voice comes from a real recording rather than synthesised speech, the effect holds together, even without a specific Swedish personality behind it the way some of its bigger languages get.

Go in as a total beginner, though, and the dials become the problem. Nobody's teaching you Swedish here, only reacting to it, so you need enough already in your head to give it something to react to.

4. TalkPal

Built for: learners who want to get talking without all the fiddling around

TalkPal gets you talking almost immediately: pick role-play, a topic, or an image prompt, and you're straight into a conversation.

What you notice fairly fast is the ceiling.

The voice sits closer to synthetic than human, my testers picked up on it within a few exchanges, and there's no pitch accent to speak of, which for Swedish is a real gap, not a cosmetic one.

Nothing carries between sessions either, so whatever you covered yesterday isn't there today.

Duolingo, For Now

Nearly two million people are on Duolingo's Swedish course, so as a way into the basics, it clearly works for a lot of people.

Speaking practice is where it stops. The AI conversation features other Duolingo languages have picked up, Video Call and Roleplay, haven't reached Swedish, and there's no public timeline for when, or if, that changes.

Keep it for the Swedish vocabulary and the streak. Look elsewhere for the actual talking.
