When I sat down with Anna Tyrie to talk about accents and pronunciation, I expected a conversation about mouth positions and vowel sounds. And we did get there eventually.

But what struck me most was how deeply her work is rooted in something far more personal – the anxiety that holds so many language learners back from being themselves.

What Is English Like A Native Really About?

Anna Tyrie describes her mission in simple terms: she wants her students to feel as confident and as much like themselves when they speak English as when they speak their native language.

“So many people feel stuck when they're trying to communicate or work or socialise or have relationships in a second language,” she told me. “I want to try to free them from that prison and allow them to feel open and confident enough to integrate and to live the life that they want and deserve.”

It's a goal that resonates with what I hear from language learners all the time. People very rarely write to me saying they're struggling with grammar or verb conjugation.

Instead, they say things like, “I'm so tired of feeling like a dumb teenager whenever I open my mouth and speak Spanish.”

Language learning can wreak havoc with your sense of self, and it's that identity crisis – not the technical challenge – that really destabilises learners.

Anna shared a heartbreaking example. A woman who had joined her programme had been living in the UK for eight years. She hadn't managed to build a proper community.

She was doing a job she hated, one she was way overqualified for, because her anxiety about her English held her back from pursuing anything better. Eight years of not fully living her life because of language anxiety.

From Stage Fright To Accent Expert

What makes Anna Tyrie's story so compelling is that she understands anxiety from the inside out.

As a child, she was the girl who would cross the road to avoid walking past a group of teenagers. She hated her own nervousness but couldn't seem to shake it – even as she kept putting herself on stage and entering talent contests.

Her grandmother was a huge influence. A polyglot who taught Japanese and German in Liverpool, she was also a gifted storyteller. “She would entertain us for hours,” Anna told me.

“She'd tell stories and just switch into these characters. I couldn't believe that someone could be so good at switching accents.” Anna looked up to her and wanted to be more like her.

That admiration led Anna to study drama, where she discovered a natural talent for accent work.

She thrived in her accent training classes and eventually went on to the Royal Academy of Music to study musical theatre, driven by a desire to overcome the anxiety she felt whenever a role required her to sing.

From there, her career took a series of unexpected turns. She trained as a singing teacher, then began teaching elocution – the art of clear speech and voice production for native speakers.

When several children in her drama class turned up with lisps after a summer break, she realised her understanding of voice mechanics meant she could help them.

That opened the door to elocution teaching, which in turn led to working with non-native English speakers.

How Did Anna Tyrie End Up Teaching English?

It happened organically. Many of Anna's elocution students were non-native English speakers, and during their sessions they would ask language questions:

• why does the meaning of a word change when you add a preposition?
• what does this phrase actually mean, because people keep laughing when I use it?

Anna found herself naturally drawn into understanding her own language more deeply so she could help her students.

She was already creating content on YouTube, so she began offering English language lessons alongside her voice and singing content.

The demand for English learning far outstripped the demand for singing lessons, and the channel grew rapidly. As Anna puts it, “I'm an opportunist – I follow the water.”

Why Are Vowels The Key To Better Pronunciation?

Whether Anna Tyrie is coaching an actor preparing for a role or helping a non-native speaker improve their English, she starts in the same place: vowels.

Vowels, she explains, are the most instrumental difference between different speakers and different target accents. When she assesses new students, she often finds there are only four or five vowel shifts they need to make to see a huge improvement in clarity.

Getting those vowels right – making more space in the mouth – can correct many of the miscommunications and misunderstandings that hold learners back.

This is something I find fascinating, because I've seen the same thing from the other side. As someone who has learned several languages, I know how maddeningly difficult vowels can be.

In Cantonese, for example, I encounter vowel sounds that I literally cannot hear, no matter how much native Cantonese I listen to. My ear just doesn't pick them up.

Anna says it comes down to ear training. “You have to actively try to train your ears and really deeply hear the differences,” she said. We learn the sounds of our native language during our developmental years, absorbing rhythms and distinctions without effort.

When we come to a new language as adults, we have to consciously retrain our ears to hear differences that simply don't exist in our mother tongue.

It's the same challenge an English speaker faces with Thai tones – the subtlety is there, but our ears aren't tuned to it yet.

The Accent Versus Pronunciation Distinction

One thing I've always been careful to separate is accent and pronunciation, and Anna agrees wholeheartedly. An accent is a regional variation – it's part of who you are.

Pronunciation, on the other hand, is about whether you're producing the sounds of a language correctly enough to be understood.

When I think about friends of mine living in the UK who speak essentially perfect English but still carry traces of their Japanese or Spanish accent, that accent is part of their identity. I love them for it. It tells me who they are as a person, and it's utterly irrelevant to communication.

But that's quite different from someone who can't produce basic sounds in the language – the classic example being Japanese speakers struggling with the L and R distinction, or Spanish speakers who can't produce English diphthongs because their native vowel system is so much simpler.

Anna doesn't want to eradicate anyone's heritage. Her goal is to improve pronunciation and build confidence, not to strip away identity.

Though she acknowledges that some learners genuinely want to sound like a native speaker, and she's happy to help with that too.

More often than not, though, the real issue is simpler than people think. “Sometimes they think that their accent is a blocker,” Anna explained, “when often it's just clarity that's the problem.”

How To Practise Pronunciation On Your Own

I asked Anna whether it's possible to improve your pronunciation without a teacher, and her answer was encouraging: absolutely, you can.

The key, she says, is to find a model – one specific speaker whose pronunciation you like — and make sure there's enough material available for you to absorb a wide variety of their speech. Then the work begins in two stages.

First, listen passively to get the tune. While you're listening, mimic along as if it's a song. Pronunciation isn't just about individual sounds; it's about how words link together, the rhythm and the melody of speech.

Second, work with very small amounts of material. Take 30 seconds of a clip, get the transcript and start marking where things sound different from how you would say them.

Then practise those specific features until you can shadow the speaker perfectly – speaking at the same time, with the same rhythm, tone and pronunciation.

Anna also recommends a technique that actors use when switching accents: find an anchor phrase. This is a single line that contains a couple of key vowel shifts for your target accent.

When you say it, it snaps you out of your natural speech patterns and situates you in the new accent. It's a brilliantly practical trick that any language learner can adopt.

Self-recording is another tool Anna swears by. She encourages her students to record themselves and listen back – but with a warm, open heart, not a self-critical one.

She also recommends watching the position of your mouth in a mirror. Often, students understand what they're supposed to do when they're with a teacher, but the moment they're practising alone, they stop making the physical adjustments that matter.
