John Fotheringham On Fast Fluency From Home

John Fotheringham has been in the language learning space for longer than most.

His podcast, the Language Mastery Show, was the first podcast I ever appeared on – back in 2013, before anyone knew who I was.

Since then, John has rebranded to Anywhere Immersion, a name that captures exactly what he teaches: how to learn any language without needing to move abroad.

I wanted to talk to John because his approach speaks to a reality that most language learners face. We're not all twenty-somethings with the freedom to disappear to Japan for five years.

Most of us have jobs, families and responsibilities. The question isn't whether immersion works – of course it does. The question is how to create something like immersion when you're stuck at home.

Who Is John Fotheringham?

John's background is in linguistics, though he's quick to point out he's still figuring out exactly who he is at forty-five.

He lived in Japan for a couple of years and spent time in Taiwan, but most of his language learning journey has happened from the United States.

“Having been to countries where I either didn't speak any of the language or only knew enough to get in trouble, it became very clear how useful it is to actually be able to communicate enough at least to feed yourself and hopefully not end up in jail.”

That experience of arriving somewhere unprepared – and the frustration that comes with it – shaped his entire philosophy.

• And more importantly, how do you maintain and grow your languages when you're not living in the country?

What Is Anywhere Immersion?

The concept is straightforward: no matter where you live or what language you're learning, you try to make sure that everything you're hearing, seeing, reading and saying is in that language.

John recommends starting with an hour of total immersion per day as a target. That might include reading, listening to podcasts, watching content or chatting with an AI bot or tutor.

The key is consistency and making the language part of your daily routine rather than something you do in occasional bursts.

When John started back in 2009, finding resources was genuinely difficult. Now, he says, the problem is the opposite:

“There's so much. It's a matter of being more decisive and intentional about what you decide to stream on Netflix or what books you decide to buy.”

The Paradox Of Too Much Choice

I still remember learning French in 2000. There was one bookstore in Soho – the European Bookstore – where you could actually find a decent selection of French grammar books.

I'd schlep across London just to get there. When you found a book, you cherished it. You worked through the whole thing.

Now we're drowning in resources. You'd think this abundance would make everyone fluent in seven weeks, but it doesn't work that way.

John sees learners falling into what he calls “an accumulation trap” – constantly gathering more apps, courses, Netflix shows and books that sit unopened on shelves or devices.

“The perfect content you never consume is not useful. Much better to pick one or two things that you actually will go through. Pick one Netflix show and watch it all the way through instead of trying to pick the top ten.”

How Do You Choose The Right Resources?

John uses two filters: level and interest. You want content just above your current level – enough to push you, but not so difficult that you give up. But interest matters too, and these filters interact with each other.

“If you're super interested in a topic, then you tend to be able to handle stuff a little bit beyond your level. If it were on a topic that you didn't care about, you'd quickly give up.”

That said, there's a limit. No amount of passion will make a complete beginner understand an advanced documentary.

If you're spending three hours working through one page with a dictionary, the content is simply too hard, regardless of how fascinating you find the subject.

Why Extensive Reading Beats Intensive Reading

John has noticed a tendency among Japanese and Mandarin learners especially – a kind of masochism where people spend hours looking up every unknown word on a single page.

This intensive approach has its place, but John believes extensive reading should be the default.

With extensive reading, you're going for volume and understanding the gist. You're getting through chapters and books rather than obsessing over every unfamiliar character or grammar point.

One way John prevents himself from falling into the intensive trap is by sticking to physical books.

“Despite all the digital tools we have today, good old-fashioned paper is still powerful.”

He also recommends reading books you've already read in English – you know the context and basic story, which makes it much easier to keep going.

I've actually gone the opposite direction with Japanese. The friction of looking up kanji in a physical dictionary is so great that I'd rather read on a Kindle where I can do one-click lookups.

But John's point stands: you need to know yourself and your tendencies. If digital tools lead you to look up every word compulsively, paper might be better.

Is Immersion Enough On Its Own?

No. Immersion is necessary but not sufficient – the queen on the chessboard, as John puts it, but not the only piece.

“A common mistake I've seen people make is they'll just immerse, but they never actually make the next step of processing or repeating or practising. If you just watch TV and you don't understand it, that's not gonna get you very far.”

A small amount of deliberate study goes a long way, but it should rest upon an immersion foundation.

Most traditional learners have it backwards – spending eighty or ninety percent of their time studying rules and memorising flashcards with no context, and very little time actually using the language.

“Most people say ‘I want to learn to speak Japanese.' They're not saying ‘I want to learn to know lots of words in Japanese.”

The directness of practice matters enormously.

Balancing The Four Skills

Ideally, you'd spend roughly equal time on listening, reading, speaking and writing. In practice, John admits this never happens.

Most learners end up with something like seventy percent listening, twenty-five percent reading, and maybe one percent speaking and writing combined.

The active skills – speaking and writing – require more effort because you're opening yourself up to making mistakes and looking foolish (unless you practise speaking by yourself, which is totally possible!).

This is where John sees AI as particularly valuable, especially for learners earlier in their journey. It's not a replacement for speaking with actual humans, but it's a useful on-ramp.

How Should Beginners Approach Immersion?

When I asked John whether his approach changes for someone just starting a language versus someone three years in, he was honest: beginners can't simply jump in and watch TV shows.

“If you are brand new or very early on, it is going to look much more like language learning as opposed to what I consider immersion.”

Learning the most common hundred to five hundred words deliberately – using something like Anki – can help build that foundation.

The ugly secret of the “just immerse yourself” crowd is that there's always a less glamorous front-loading phase.

Immersion becomes fun once you have enough of the language in you to actually understand and enjoy content. Getting to that point requires some deliberate study first.

Do Textbooks Have A Place?

John used to be strongly anti-textbook after seeing the dark side of traditional education while teaching English in Taiwan. But he's since reconsidered.

“I think I swung too far. There is value in having things all laid out in one place – so long as you don't expect you're gonna read this textbook and be able to both understand and utilise everything that was in it.”

I've become more of a textbook fan myself. When you're starting a new language, you don't know what you don't know. Someone smart has already done the hard work of curating the most important things you need to get started. Why not take advantage of that?

The Difference Between Teachers And Tutors

John makes a useful distinction here. A teacher is someone who understands the terrain and has arranged material to help you learn quickly. A tutor is someone helping you practise. Both are valuable, and a lot of tutoring can now be done with AI.

Interestingly, John recommends non-native speaker teachers for beginners. They've been through what you're going through – they know where the roadblocks and pitfalls are.

A native Japanese speaker often doesn't have intuition about what's actually hard for an English speaker, and vice versa.

What Can AI Actually Do For Language Learners?

John uses ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini regularly, with three main use cases.

• First, clarifying nuances: “What's the difference between A and B?” Often two Japanese words will have the same English translation, but there are subtle distinctions a dictionary won't explain. AI can give you example sentences and explain the difference.
• Second, finding mistakes: Before sending an email in Japanese, John will ask AI to point out errors – wrong particles, unnatural phrasing, things a native speaker would say differently.
• Third, discovering resources: “Find me a YouTube channel that talks about Japanese gardening in Japanese” or “Are there any good Netflix series available about this topic?” It's like asking AI to make a recipe from whatever ingredients you have in your fridge.

As for specific tools, John recommends Teacher AI for structured practice. It tracks words you've used, identifies mistakes and lets you create flashcards – guardrails that raw ChatGPT doesn't provide.

What About Translation Technology?

Those Apple AirPods ads where Spanish gets translated to English in real-time? John finds them vaguely dystopian.

“It creates this barrier between you. You have a device between you. You're not hearing their voice, you're hearing Siri's voice in your head. Sure, you can buy the thing you want at the market, but you didn't really make a human connection the same way that if you used your vocal cords.”

Translation tech might eventually change whether people want to learn languages at all. But for now, the human connection that comes from actually speaking someone's language remains irreplaceable.

Final Thoughts

John Fotheringham's approach offers something refreshing: a realistic path for the rest of us who can't simply relocate abroad.

Anywhere Immersion is about being intentional with the hour or so you can carve out each day – choosing one Netflix show instead of ten, reading extensively instead of obsessively, and using AI as an on-ramp to real human conversation rather than a replacement for it.

The key insight is that immersion and deliberate study aren't opposites. They work together, with immersion as the foundation and focused practice filling in the gaps.

Whether you're a complete beginner front-loading vocabulary or an advanced learner maintaining languages you've already built, the principle remains the same: make the language part of your daily life, be selective about your resources, and don't wait for the perfect circumstances that may never come.
