But a lot of these apps promise the world and deliver very little. I've spent a lot of time testing them myself, and the differences between the best and the rest are significant.

In this article I'll share what I found, including what each app does well, and where it struggles. Let's get into it.

Here are the tools I'd recommend for anyone looking to leverage AI to learn Spanish faster.

1. Langua

Best for: Learners looking for the most realistic speaking practice and detailed feedback

Langua is the best AI Spanish app I've found for learners who want serious speaking practice and feedback. It goes well beyond simple back-and-forth chat.

You can use Chat Mode for a standard chat-based conversation, or switch to Call Mode for a hands-free, phone-style experience.

And the range of conversational exercises is impressive: you can choose between role-plays, discussions about your interests/life, vocabulary practice, and more.

The voices are cloned from real native speakers (including well-known YouTubers) rather than generated from scratch, which makes conversation practice feel far more realistic.

But what truly sets it apart for me is the feedback quality. After each conversation, you get a detailed report on your mistakes, and the app builds personalised grammar drills based on the errors you actually make. You can also choose how you receive feedback: explicit or subtle, verbal or written, depending on what works best for you.

One thing I really appreciate as a learner: you can speak in your native language when you're stuck, and the AI will still understand you. That's a small detail that makes a big difference when you know what you want to say but the Spanish words won't come.

The transcription occasionally mishears you, as with any AI tool, but Langua lets you switch between all the best transcription models.

You've almost certainly heard of ChatGPT. It's the most talked-about AI tool in the world, and yes, you can use it to practise Spanish.

But there's an important distinction to make: ChatGPT is not a language learning app. It's a general-purpose AI that you happen to be able to converse with in Spanish.

If your goal is to learn Spanish with AI, it can work, but you have to bring the structure yourself.

I tested it extensively for Spanish practice, and it works fine as a conversation partner if you're willing to do the setup work yourself. The audio mode feels impressively lifelike and even allows you to interrupt mid-sentence.

But the moment you stop to think, it cuts you off, which is genuinely frustrating when you're searching for a word.

The bigger issue is structure. There are no suggested topics, no vocabulary system, no grammar tracking. You start from a blank page every single session. If you ask it to correct your Spanish, it will — but you have to ask it every time.

Most learners stop bothering after a while. And there's no option to select a specific dialect, so the AI tends to default to a fairly neutral accent rather than Mexican, Argentine, or Castilian Spanish.

Like Langua, the voices are cloned from native speakers, which keeps conversations feeling natural. That flexibility is genuinely useful if you know exactly what kind of practice you want.

It won't replace a structured learning programme, and it's not designed for beginners — you'll want at least a conversational foundation before the sessions become worthwhile.

But as a speaking practice tool for intermediate and advanced learners, it's worth considering.

4. Speak

Best for: Beginners who want a structured learning path

Speak is a well-built app with a clear focus on beginners. The interface is smooth, the Spanish voices sound natural, and the scenario-based role-plays cover useful real-life situations: ordering at a café, making plans, navigating travel.

If you're just starting out and want something with clear progression, it's a reasonable choice.

The limitations show as you progress, though. The feedback is fairly light — you get flagged when something is wrong, but not much explanation of why.

At intermediate level and beyond, the lesson variety starts to feel thin, and the app clearly wasn't built with advanced learners in mind. There's also no spaced repetition system for vocabulary retention, which is a real gap.

Pricing: Varies by country. Premium Plus (with unlimited custom lessons) costs significantly more than the base tier, and the tiers are rather confusing.

5. Duolingo

Best for: Learners who want gamified motivation

Duolingo is the most recognised language learning app in the world, and Spanish is the language it was built around.

In 2024 it added AI-powered conversation features: Video Call (a chat with its mascot Lily) and Adventures (scenario simulations). These were initially Max-tier only, though access has been expanding.

For motivation and consistency, Duolingo is genuinely hard to beat. The streaks and rewards keep many learners coming back daily, and that consistency matters more than most people admit.

But Spanish speaking practice is not what it was built for. The AI conversation features feel like an add-on to the core gamified experience, and the conversations themselves are less realistic than dedicated tools like Langua.

If you're already a Duolingo user and want to add some speaking practice without switching apps, the AI features are worth exploring. Just don't expect the depth of correction or feedback that a purpose-built tool provides.

6. TalkPal

Best for: Learners who want a simple AI conversation tool

TalkPal is a conversational AI app built specifically for language learners, and Spanish is one of its supported languages.

It's easy to get started with and offers a few different conversation formats: role-plays, topic-based discussions, and image description exercises.

In practice it's a fairly basic option. The conversation practice works, but the experience doesn't feel natural, and the voice quality has a noticeably more robotic tone.

There's no vocabulary saving, no flashcard system, and no grammar tracking across sessions. It's a conversation tool and not much more than that.

One quirk worth mentioning: some of the conversation prompts are wildly ambitious for the level.

During testing, an opening prompt invited me to debate the philosophical differences between capitalism and socialism. Challenging enough in your first language, never mind your second.

Pricing: $11.99/month (cheaper on an annual plan). No free trial, but a limited free plan lets you get a feel for the app.

That said, most of these tools are not purpose-built for language learners, and it shows.

If you want something that actually tracks your progress, corrects your Spanish automatically, and builds your vocabulary over time, Langua is the one I'd recommend.

It's the only tool on this list that combines conversation practice, vocabulary building, and listening input in a way that supports long-term improvement.
