If you've got a long commute, you've probably wondered whether you can learn a language while driving. After all, that's potentially hours of time each week that could be put to good use.
A blog reader called Ron recently asked me this very question. He's about to start commuting an hour each way to work and wanted to know how to make the most of that time for language learning.
He'd tried audiobooks but found it hard to stay focused because he couldn't understand most of what he was hearing.
It's a brilliant question, and one I think will resonate with a lot of people.

Why Learning Languages In The Car Is Tricky
I've always found it a little bit difficult to learn a language while driving because you're never totally concentrating. If you're not driving, that's a different story – you can pay full attention.
But when your hands are on the wheel and your eyes are on the road, you can't give your full focus to whatever you're listening to.
And listening is really the only thing you can do realistically to learn a language while driving.
Now, if you're at a higher level in the language, you can listen to audiobooks and podcasts, and even if you don't understand everything, it's still quite useful.
But if you're a beginner? That's where things get complicated.
The Number One Rule Of Listening
Remember the number one rule of listening: listen to material you can understand. There's no point listening to stuff that's way above your level. You want to be listening to things that are only slightly above your level.
Based on this principle, I'd agree with Ron that as a beginner, listening to audiobooks and podcasts isn't a particularly good use of the time.
It's obviously still better than nothing – if the choice is between English audio and Spanish audio (or whatever language you're learning), obviously choose the foreign language. Your ear will at least pick up on the sounds of the language.
But there's a better approach to learn a language in the car.
The Recycling Method: Combine Driving Time & Focused Study
Given that you're not going to be able to give your full attention to anything whilst driving, the best thing to do is combine your driving time with a period of more focused study at home. The key is to recycle the material.
Here's how I'm thinking about this: let's say at home you spend half an hour studying something in an intensive way, looking at it in detail. You're priming your brain with the information – maybe learning some grammar points or vocabulary.
Then, when you get in the car and drive for an hour, you listen to that same material. It helps consolidate everything you've studied.
Best Way To Learn A Language While Driving
I'm going to give you something very specific here because it's really the only thing that comes to mind as a profitable use of the time.
Given that you're a beginner, get yourself a textbook with lots of dialogues in it.
Take a standard “teach yourself” type textbook with 20 dialogues (or a StoryLearning course – you can listen to the chapters of the story)
Get those dialogues on your phone
Play them one after the other on repeat in the car
Create a playlist with those 20 dialogues and listen to them on one huge cycle
This works because the dialogues are at your level, so you can catch useful information. But more importantly, you're using that driving time to reinforce material you're going to study (or have already studied) in a focused way.
If you're studying these dialogues and lessons in the morning with full concentration, then listening to them extensively in the car, everything reinforces itself. It won't be wasted time.
Even though you can't focus all your attention on the dialogues whilst driving, if you've already picked apart some of the language at home, that listening time will reinforce it.
The vocabulary will be within your reach. You'll know the grammar patterns, or at least be aware of them. You're spending that listening time consolidating what you've learned at home.
Learn A Language In The Car With Pimsleur Or Michel Thomas
You could try a Pimsleur or Michel Thomas type programme. It's worth it for a week or so because you do learn some stuff – but not much.
Given that you've got so much driving time, the real opportunity is to spend it all listening to material you can later study and which is going to recycle itself.
When you get bored (which you will, sooner or later), just get another beginner's textbook.
The principles stay the same: find something as close to your level as possible, listen to it on repeat, and then sit down and look at it in more detail when you're able. That whole process goes on in an endless loop.
Can You Learn A Language While Driving?
Here's one more thing, and I know it might be frustrating to hear: don't place too much stock on your time in the car for study.
It's all extra time that can be used to good effect, and it can be valuable and helpful. But the real learning has to be done when you're sat down in a focused way.
Use the time in the car to recycle stuff you're doing in your own dedicated study time.
When I was living in Qatar, I used to drive to work every day, but it was only about 10 minutes. All I could really do was play my textbook dialogues on repeat.
To be honest, I'm not sure if you can stand it for an hour – but I think you've just got to stick to the principles here, stick to what works, and see how it goes.
Learn A Language While Driving FAQ
Can I Do Duolingo While Driving?
No, you should not use Duolingo while driving. It requires visual attention and interaction, which is dangerous and unsafe on the road.
If you want to learn while driving, choose hands-free options instead, such as language podcasts, audio lessons, or listening to music and radio in your target language. These let you learn without taking your eyes or focus off driving.
What Is The Best App For Learning A New Language While Driving?
Here are some of the best apps and audio resources for learning a language while driving (safe because they focus on listening, not screen interaction):
Pimsleur – A classic audio-first language course with lessons you can play hands-free and repeat aloud, ideal during a commute.
Speak App – Plays spoken vocabulary and phrases with pauses so you can think or speak yourself, perfect for listening on the go.
LanguagePod101 / Pod-style lessons – Podcast-based language lessons available in many languages; great for audio listening during drives.
Audio Podcast Lessons – Free options like Coffee Break Languages or YouTube audio lessons are excellent hands-free content you can play through your car speakers.
For best safety, make sure any learning while driving is pure audio listening, not requiring visual interaction.
Can You Use Pimsleur While Driving?
Yes, you can use Pimsleur while driving because it is designed as an audio-only language course.
Lessons are hands-free and focus on listening and speaking, so you don’t need to look at a screen.
This makes Pimsleur one of the safest and most effective language learning options for commuting or driving.
How To Learn A Language While Driving
Learning a language while driving is absolutely possible, but it requires the right approach. The key is understanding that car time isn't for intensive study – it's for reinforcement and consolidation.
The material you engage with deeply at your desk becomes familiar background reinforcement in the car, and that repetition is where real acquisition happens.
Start with beginner-appropriate dialogues from a good textbook, listen to them on rotation, and let that recycling process do its work.
Your commute might never feel like “proper” study time, but used strategically, those hours in the car can become one of the most effective parts of your language learning routine.
