The Russian course covers the basics solidly, Cyrillic included. The trouble is that Duolingo was never really built around speaking.

At the time of writing, its AI conversation feature pairs you with Lily — a mascot whose default setting is faintly teenage boredom, and not much of an advert for lively dialogue. It's a thin offering next to the range of characters you can talk to on Langua or Teacher AI.

There's also a ceiling on how far the grammar goes. You can rack up hundreds of lessons without ever really getting to grips with the case system or verb aspect — the things that actually make Russian hard. Sooner or later you'll need a different tool.

Use Duolingo to build the routine and get comfortable with vocabulary. For real speaking practice and proper feedback, pair it with something purpose-built.

3. ChatGPT

Ideal for: self-directed learners who want a free, flexible place to begin

ChatGPT will hold a perfectly decent Russian conversation. The voice mode is reasonably smooth – you can cut in mid-sentence.

And if you're happy to set things up yourself — writing the exercise, asking for corrections, specifying the register you want — it does a respectable job.

The snag is that “happy to set things up yourself” carries more weight than it first appears.

Russian learners need steady feedback on case endings, aspect, and verbs of motion — the structural machinery that almost never beds in without regular correction.

ChatGPT will correct you when you ask, but you have to keep asking. There's no grammar log, and no simple way to keep hammering away at your weak points.

It also leans towards neutral, textbook Russian. If you want the looser, colloquial register that real conversations actually run on, it won't give you that on its own.

4. Teacher AI

Ideal for: intermediate and advanced learners who want fine control over their practice

Teacher AI is for the sort of learner who likes to fiddle with every setting — and I mean every setting. It gives you a lot of say in how your Russian sessions run.

More useful still, you can fine-tune how the sessions actually go: how fast your teacher speaks, how formal they are, how often they pull you up, and how much English creeps in.

For learners who already know the kind of Russian they're after — formal language for work, say, or relaxed everyday conversation — that level of control is properly useful.

In practice, it's the most basic option here. The voice quality is noticeably more synthetic than Langua or Teacher AI, there's no vocabulary saving, no flashcard system, and no record of the grammar you fumbled last time. It's a conversation tool and not much more.

One quirk that stuck with me: the prompts don't always match the level you've set. In one Russian session, my Russian-speakking friend was cheerfully invited to debate whether free will survives the world Dostoevsky describes. In Russian. A tall order in your first language, never mind at B2.
