Language Laddering: Should You Learn One Language Via Another?

A listener from Brazil recently sent me an interesting question. Fernando is learning French, but instead of using Portuguese (his native language) on his flashcards, he's been using English on one side and French on the other.

His question: is this a good idea, or is he making things harder for himself?

This is a perfect example of language laddering – using one language you know to learn another. It's a concept that comes up a lot in polyglot circles, and I've had guests on the show discuss it before.

But I think Fernando's specific situation raises some important points worth exploring.

What Is Language Laddering?

Language laddering simply means using a language other than your mother tongue as a bridge to learn a new language.

So instead of learning French through Portuguese, Fernando is learning French through English. Instead of Spanish-to-Korean resources, you might use Japanese-to-Korean materials.

It sounds clever, and in some cases it genuinely is. But in others, it can slow you down significantly. The key is understanding when language laddering actually helps and when it just adds unnecessary complexity.

When Language Laddering Actually Makes Sense

There's really only one scenario where I think language laddering is genuinely useful: when the two languages in question are very similar.

Let me give you an example. Say I'm an English speaker wanting to learn Korean. If I use a standard English-language textbook, every concept in Korean has to be explained to me as an English speaker.

That's a bit cumbersome because there are certain concepts in Korean that don't match English at all, so the textbook has to go to great lengths explaining things that feel quite foreign.

However, if I already speak Japanese, I might choose to use a Korean textbook designed for Japanese speakers. Why? Because Korean and Japanese are structurally very similar.

Instead of lengthy explanations, the textbook can simply say “in Korean we say this, and it's exactly the same as what you say in Japanese.” You save a huge amount of time and the learning becomes far more efficient.

The same principle applies to other language families. If you already speak Czech or Polish, for instance, you might find it useful to learn Russian through one of those languages rather than through English. The complex case systems are similar, so you get a lot for free.

Laddering Just For The Sake Of It

The second reason people try language laddering is simply because they want to – they think it's a cool idea, or they figure it gives them extra practice in that intermediate language.

I'm not a fan of this approach, and here's why.

When you start learning a new language, your aim should always be to make progress as quickly as possible. You want to reach a point where you understand as much as you can, as fast as you can. Why would you deliberately slow yourself down?

There's already so much potential for getting discouraged or demotivated when learning a language. When I see people struggling, it's usually not because of their method – it's because they've lost motivation somewhere along the way.

Speed and efficiency matter enormously, not just for practical reasons, but for keeping you engaged and excited about your progress.

Does Language Laddering Slow You Down?

This is the crucial question. If you're using a language you're completely fluent in – a language that's just as strong as your mother tongue – then laddering probably won't hurt you. You might even find more interesting materials that way.

But in most cases, if you're using a language that isn't at a very high standard, it's probably going to slow you down. You'll need that little bit of extra time to understand everything, and those small delays add up.

In Fernando's case, he knows English well, but it's not his native language. My instinct would be to use Portuguese to study French, simply because he'll be able to engage with the French content and understand it so much more quickly.

The Real Goal: Getting Into Your Target Language

Here's the bigger picture. The ultimate objective when learning any language is to reach a point where you're not using another language at all. You want to move 100% into your target language.

For a Romance language like French, there's no reason you can't do this fairly quickly. You might go through one textbook to learn the basics, but after that you can shift into doing everything in French – reading, listening, thinking.

My strategy is always: let's get to that point as fast as possible using the most direct path available. Using another intermediate language, when you have a perfectly good mother tongue, is rarely that direct path.

What About Flashcards Specifically?

Since Fernando mentioned flashcards, let's talk about those for a moment.

My approach to flashcards is to have my mother tongue on the front of the card – that's the side I see first. It's there purely to jog my memory, to remind me of the thing I want to say. Then I try to produce that in the target language.

I'm not using flashcards to practise my mother tongue. I'm not trying to do anything else with that first side. It's simply a memory trigger.

So in Fernando's case, the question is straightforward: does using English slow him down, or not? At the beginning, with basic French vocabulary, maybe not.

But as things get more complex, he needs to honestly assess whether that intermediate step through English is costing him time and mental energy.

Getting Extra Practice In Your Other Language

One argument I hear is “but I want to get a bit of extra English practice.” Fair enough – but there are much better ways to do that.

Seeing the odd English word on a flashcard here and there isn't going to make any meaningful difference to your English level.

If you want real practice, spend 30 minutes in the evening watching something in English, reading a book, or having a conversation online. Those activities will actually move the needle.

Using English to interfere with your French learning process? That's not efficient practice for either language.

The Bottom Line On Language Laddering

Language laddering can be a powerful technique in the right circumstances – specifically, when you're using a closely related language to unlock patterns and concepts that would be harder to grasp through English or another distant language.

If you speak Polish and want to learn Russian, by all means explore Polish-language resources. If you're fluent in Japanese and tackling Korean, a Japanese textbook might serve you better than an English one.

But for most learners, language laddering adds an unnecessary layer of complexity. Your mother tongue offers the most direct route into your target language, and speed matters more than most people realise.

The faster you progress, the more motivated you stay, and motivation is ultimately what determines success. If your intermediate language isn't rock-solid, you're likely just creating extra work for yourself.

My advice? Take the direct path. Use your strongest language as your foundation, then transition into your target language as quickly as possible. That's where the real learning happens.
