How To Achieve Real Spoken Fluency In A Language

I received a comment recently from someone who had been going deep on language learning methods — following channels, reading forums, comparing approaches — and he was getting frustrated.

He understood how to learn a language, he said, but nobody could actually show him how to speak it fluently. He wanted a method, a step-by-step system, a clear path from knowledge to spoken fluency.

And his frustration is completely understandable, because this question is one that almost every language learner will face at some point.

The answer, I'm afraid, is both simple and uncomfortable. Let me tell you what I've learnt from doing this in many languages myself.

The Night That Taught Me Everything

Many years ago, when I was learning Spanish, I found myself in the Canary Islands with my best friend Tomás and around ten of his childhood friends.

We ended up at an incredible open-air bar by the sea, arriving at ten or eleven at night and staying until four or five in the morning.

You can imagine the scene. These were people who had known each other since they were six years old. They spoke fast. They had years' worth of in-jokes and slang.

It was loud, warm and relentless — the most authentically challenging situation you could possibly be in as an intermediate language learner.

At that point, my Spanish was decent but far from perfect. I was probably at a solid intermediate level. And I made a decision: I wasn't going to sit on the sidelines. I was going to get involved, contribute to the conversation, and keep going all night.

So I talked. I listened. I said the wrong things, got asked to repeat myself, was corrected, laughed at good-naturedly, and kept pushing. Ten o'clock became midnight, midnight became two in the morning, two became four.

By the end, I had a blazing headache — not the usual kind behind my eyes, but a deep, general ache across my whole brain. It was the physical sensation of having pushed every sinew I had for hours on end just to keep talking, understanding and participating.

That night — and many others like it — is how I developed spoken fluency in Spanish. And versions of that experience have repeated themselves across every other language I've reached a high level in.

The Two Phases Of Language Learning

I think about language learning as falling into two distinct phases. The first is the learning phase. This is where almost all the advice you'll find online lives: methods for acquiring vocabulary, approaches to grammar, systems for studying with stories or TV shows or immersion.

Different teachers will advocate different things, and honestly, it doesn't matter that much which approach you follow. What matters is that you learn the language — the words, the structures, the way it's constructed and how to think in it.

The second phase is the application phase. This is where you take everything in your head and actually activate it. And activating it, for me, means one thing: sitting down with native speakers and speaking.

Here's the thing: a lot of learners stay in the learning phase indefinitely. They geek out on methods, read about approaches, keep studying — and never make the leap into actually speaking.

I understand the appeal. The learning phase is comfortable. You're in control. You can study at your own pace without the discomfort of being misunderstood or making mistakes in front of real people.

But at some point, that phase runs its course. And what you have to do next is simply get out and speak — a lot, and with real people.

Why There's No Method For Spoken Fluency

This is where it gets a little uncomfortable, because I know it's not what most people want to hear. When it comes to actually developing spoken fluency, there is no method. There is no app, no course, no textbook exercise that replicates the experience of real conversation.

Everything that promises to help you practise speaking — and there are plenty of products making exactly that promise — is still operating in the learning phase. It's preparation. It's useful, but it isn't the thing itself.

The thing itself is hours and hours of airtime:

• actually being there, speaking with people, figuring things out in real time
• the back-and-forth
• the moments when you forget a word and have to find a way around it
• the pressure of keeping up with a fast speaker
• the physical experience of talking so much that your jaw aches

That's not metaphor — on that night in the Canary Islands, my jaw was literally sore from hours of speaking. These are the things that build spoken fluency, and there is no shortcut to them.

How Do You Actually Find The Time To Speak?

I recognise this is a genuine practical challenge. When I was younger, I had easy access to native speakers — I was travelling, making friends across different countries, immersed in environments where practice was natural.

Not everyone has those conditions, and I was lucky to have them.

But there are ways to create the conditions you need, wherever you are. Here are the approaches I'd recommend:

1. Find a community in your local area. In most cities, there are groups of native speakers of almost any major language, and finding your way into those communities is one of the most valuable things you can do.
2. Language exchanges — either face to face or online — are another excellent option, and I relied heavily on these when I was learning Japanese in Japan.
3. Online tutoring platforms like Langua give you access to native speakers for regular lessons, and if you use those sessions for genuine conversation rather than structured exercises, they can be extremely effective.
4. AI speaking apps didn't exist when I was first learning languages, but they do now and they're a great way to get speaking practice whenever you want.
5. Practise speaking a language by yourself – the ultimate low or no tech way to get speaking practice whenever you want is to talk to yourself by either narrating your day or practising specific scenarios.

The key is volume. You need a lot of hours. Whatever combination of methods gets you those hours is the right one for your situation.

Stop Looking For The Secret

There's a reason so many language learners keep hunting for the perfect method: we all want to believe there's a shortcut, a hack, a smarter way that spares us from the difficult parts. And in the learning phase, there genuinely are smarter and less smart approaches.

But for spoken fluency, the secret is simply speaking. A great deal of it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is doing you a disservice.

The student who has studied a language analytically for twenty-five years and still can't hold a conversation — and I've met people in exactly that position — is not someone who chose the wrong method.

They're someone who never made the leap into the application phase. They stayed comfortable, stayed in their head, and never had their version of that long night in a bar in Tenerife.

Make The Leap

If you've been learning a language for a while and you're wondering why your spoken fluency isn't where you want it to be, the answer is almost certainly this: you need more airtime.

More real conversations, with real people, in real conditions — not simulated exercises, not practice apps, but the genuine back-and-forth of trying to communicate under pressure.

It's uncomfortable. Your head will hurt. You'll say the wrong things. You'll get corrected and occasionally laughed at, and you'll want to retreat back to the safety of your textbooks and your flashcards. That's all completely normal. Push through it anyway.

Spoken fluency isn't something you study your way into. It's something you talk your way into — one difficult, messy, exhilarating conversation at a time. The learning phase lays the foundation. The application phase builds the house.

Eventually you have to put down the tools, walk through the front door, and start living in the language. That moment is yours to choose. Choose it sooner rather than later.
