The Best AI App To Learn Portuguese: Reviewed By A Linguist

Can an app really get you speaking Portuguese? Real talk: a handful of AI apps for learning Portuguese are now good enough that I'd happily use them myself. But most aren't.

I put the six main contenders for the best AI app to learn Portuguese through their paces — holding conversations, getting feedback, watching for when they buckle. What follows is the selection I'd hand a friend who's learning Portuguese.

A quick word before we start. Portuguese hands AI apps a particular headache. The nasal vowels and the gulf between the Brazilian and European varieties all matter — and not every tool here copes with them equally well. I've flagged it where it counts.

1. Langua

Best suited to: committed learners who want a proper breakdown of their mistakes after every conversation

I'll be straight with you — Langua is the AI Portuguese app I keep going back to, and the first one I'd steer a serious learner towards.

The reason is simple. Most of these tools hand you a chatbot and leave it there. Langua behaves like it actually knows you're trying to learn something.

You get two ways in: Chat Mode, which is text-based, and Call Mode, which runs hands-free, like ringing up a Portuguese friend.

Inside either, there's a real menu of exercises to pick from:

• role-plays
• debates on whatever you're into
• vocabulary drills
• plain free conversation.

Whatever you happen to feel like practising that day.

But the part that wins me over is what lands once you've finished talking. You get a written report of everything you slipped up on, and the app then builds personalised grammar drills around your mistakes.

So if you keep tripping over the personal infinitive — that quietly maddening corner of Portuguese grammar — that's exactly what turns up next.

You can also set how the AI pulls you up in the moment: explicit or gentle, written or spoken, whatever doesn't knock you off your stride.

The voices are a cut above, too. They're cloned from real native speakers — a few recognisable Portuguese and Brazilian YouTubers among them — rather than stitched together by a synthesiser, and you can hear it.

The melody of Brazilian Portuguese, the clipped sounds of the European variety, the way native speakers run their words together: it all survives.

One small touch I rate as a learner: when the Portuguese point-blank refuses to come, you can drop into English and the AI keeps pace. Sounds trivial. It isn't. It's the line between a useful half hour and several minutes of quiet teeth-grinding.

There's more than conversation here, as well. Langua also packs in podcasts and videos with interactive transcripts, AI-built stories that recycle the words you've saved, and spaced-repetition flashcards.

So if bouncing between five separate apps for input, vocab, and speaking makes you tired just thinking about it, this folds most of it under one roof.

Like every AI tool, the transcription mishears you now and then — but Langua lets you swap between the leading transcription models until one sits well with your accent.

Pricing: $12–$29/month. Free account available, plus a 7-day free trial of Pro.

2. Speak

Best suited to: total beginners who want something they can simply open and follow

Speak is a polished app, and you can tell genuine product thinking has gone into it.

The onboarding is painless, the Portuguese voices sound good, and the early lessons walk you through everyday situations in a sensible order: greetings, ordering a coffee, asking directions, making small talk on a train.

If you're right at the start of your Portuguese and the prospect of “just go and practise” feels paralysing, Speak gives you a path to walk. That has real value.

The trouble shows a few months in:

• Feedback stays fairly shallow — you'll see when something's marked wrong, but the why often goes unexplained.
• The content doesn't stretch all that well into intermediate territory either; the lessons start to blur into one another.
• And there's no spaced repetition for vocabulary, which for a language as lexically rich as Portuguese is a genuine omission.

Pricing: Varies by country, with the Premium Plus tier (unlimited custom lessons) noticeably pricier than the base. The tier structure is a bit of a maze.

3. Duolingo

Best suited to: keeping you turning up, day after day

Duolingo doesn't need a sales pitch from me — it's the app most people have either used or felt a little guilty about abandoning.

And Portuguese (Brazilian, specifically) is one of its better-stocked courses.

In 2024 it added two AI-powered features worth a mention: Video Call (a natter with the mascot, Lily) and Adventures (interactive, scenario-style simulations). Both started life behind the Max paywall, though that's been loosening up.

Here's the straight version. For sheer consistency, nothing on this list comes close to Duolingo.

The streaks, the gamified loops, the little dopamine hits — they work, and showing up regularly is honestly the thing that separates the people who learn a language from the people who don't.

But if your real aim is to speak Portuguese, the AI bits feel bolted onto a product designed for something else. The conversations are less lifelike, and less corrective than what you'd get from a dedicated tool like Langua. Treat them as a pleasant extra, not your main practice.

One more thing worth flagging: the course teaches Brazilian Portuguese, so if you're aiming for the European variety, you'll be doing a bit of mental translation as you go.

Pricing: Duolingo Super is around $20/month; Max is $30/month.

4. ChatGPT

Best suited to: a free, build-it-yourself starting point, if you don't mind doing the setup

ChatGPT hardly needs me to introduce it. And yes — it'll happily practise Portuguese with you.

But I want to tread carefully, because people love to file ChatGPT next to the purpose-built apps, and that comparison doesn't really stand up.

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI that happens to speak excellent Portuguese. It was never built to help you learn Portuguese with AI, and using it as a teacher means doing the lesson-planning yourself.

That said — if you're up for putting the work in, it does the job. Voice mode is startlingly natural and lets you cut in mid-sentence, which feels far closer to a real exchange than the wooden turn-taking of older tools.

The snag? Pause for a beat or two to think, and it'll often barge straight back in, assuming you're done. For a learner groping for the right word, that's maddening.

The deeper gap is the total lack of structure. No set topics, no vocabulary it holds onto, no grammar log, no review schedule. Every session starts from nothing.

You can tell it to correct your Portuguese — but you've got to remember to ask, every single time, and most people let that habit slide within a week.

There's also no clean way to pin it to a particular Portuguese variety. Left to its own devices it tends to drift towards Brazilian Portuguese. If you're set on European Portuguese — or an African variety like Angolan or Mozambican Portuguese — that's a meaningful limitation.

Pricing: Free (with limits), or $20/month for ChatGPT Plus.

5. TalkPal

Best suited to: a low-friction option when you just want to get talking

TalkPal was built specifically for language learners, and Portuguese is well covered.

You're up and running in about a minute, and there's a decent spread of formats: role-plays, topic discussions, image-based prompts.

In practice, though, it feels a notch more basic than the front-runners. The voice quality is more synthetic than Langua's or Speak's — there's no mistaking it for a person.

There's no vocabulary saving, no flashcards, and no memory of the Portuguese grammar you fumbled last time. So whatever you pick up in one conversation doesn't really feed into the next.

One thing that got a proper laugh out of me during testing: the prompts can be wildly out of step with the level.

On a fairly modest setting, one opener cheerfully invited me to weigh up whether Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms ought to count as separate authors. In Portuguese. That's a tall order in your mother tongue, never mind your second language.

Pricing: $11.99/month (cheaper annually). No proper free trial, but there's a limited free tier so you can have a poke around before paying.

6. Teacher AI

Best suited to: intermediate and advanced learners who want to fine-tune the experience

Teacher AI covers 30 languages, and Portuguese is one of the better-served ones. What marks it out is how much you can adjust.

You pick from a roster of AI Portuguese teachers, each with their own personality and back-story, then dial in their speaking speed, their level of formality, how often they correct you, and how much English they're allowed to fall back on.

Like Langua, the voices are cloned from real native speakers, so the audio lands as human rather than machine-made.

If you know exactly what you're after — say, quick, informal Brazilian Portuguese with corrections coming thick and fast — you can engineer that here.

A caveat, though: this isn't one for beginners. Without a conversational base underneath you, all that freedom to customise becomes a burden rather than a help.

But for intermediate or advanced learners who've outgrown the lesson-by-lesson apps and want a flexible partner to talk to, it's well worth a look.

Pricing: $15/month, or $97/year. Free trial available.

The Missing Language Skill: Reading

Reading stories in Portuguese isn't just another exercise to add to your routine — it's the fastest way to level up. While the apps above focus on speaking, story-based reading lets you absorb grammar and new words the way you naturally picked up your first language.

Read enough Portuguese stories at the right level, and patterns you've been struggling to memorise (verb conjugations, gendered nouns, tricky prepositions) start to feel automatic instead of half forgotten.

That's exactly what the StoryLearning App is designed for. It generates short stories matched to your level and interests, with built-in tools to translate unfamiliar words and review them in the next story you read.

Pair fifteen minutes of daily reading with the speaking practice you're already doing, and you'll see faster progress than either approach delivers on its own.

The Best AI App To Learn Portuguese FAQ

My Verdict On The Best AI App To Learn Portuguese

Let's be honest about where we've landed. AI has changed what a Portuguese learner can do from their own sofa.

Rewind a few years and daily speaking practice meant paying a Portuguese tutor or tracking down a language exchange — neither of them easy. That barrier has mostly fallen away.

But there's a distinction worth holding onto: an app that speaks Portuguese and an app that teaches it aren't the same thing.

The general-purpose tools — ChatGPT being the obvious one — turn out lovely Portuguese. What they won't do is teach it to you with any structure behind it.

If you want a tool built for the actual job — one that logs your mistakes, grows your vocabulary out of your own conversations, and gives you both speaking and listening practice in one place — Langua is where I'd send you. It's the only app on this list that nails all three.

And one last thing, which I'll never stop banging on about: AI is a supplement to real human conversation, not a stand-in for it. Use these tools to build the confidence and the reflexes you need between conversations with real Portuguese speakers, and both will pay off far more.
