21 Greetings In Chinese To Start Connecting With Chinese Speakers
by Olly Richards
When you learn Chinese, one of the first things you need to learn are greetings in Chinese so you can start connecting with Chinese speakers.
There are quite a few different ways of greeting and taking your leave in Chinese. So to help you get started, in this post, I introduce some of the most common greetings in Chinese youโre likely to meet.
Pro Tip
By the way, if you want to learn Chinese fast and have fun, my top recommendation is Chinese Uncovered which teaches you through StoryLearningยฎ.
With Chinese Uncovered youโll use my unique StoryLearningยฎ method to learn Chinese through storyโฆ not rules. Itโs as fun as it is effective.
When you start studying Chinese, probably the first thing youโll learn how to say is the word for โhelloโ โ and if you ask someone if they know any Chinese words, if they know only one thing, it will be this. โHelloโ in Chinese is, of course:
#1 ไฝ ๅฅฝ Nฤญ hฤo (Hello)
The first character ไฝ nฤญ means โyouโ and the second character ๅฅฝ hฤo means โgoodโ, so literally it means โyou goodโ.
You can use this greeting when you' re speaking to a single person. But it's rare in everyday speech and is only used in formal settings and when meeting someone you don't know. You'll see some alternatives below that you can use with friends.
Otherwise, you will often hear it being used where in English we would say โexcuse meโ, like this:
This might not seem so polite in English, and it isnโt exactly super-polite in Chinese either. But itโs also not rude, and this is the kind of thing youโll hear in restaurants in China all the time.
Now a note about Chinese pronunciation. Although both characters have a third tone, when one third tone is followed by another, the first is pronounced as a second (rising) tone, so in reality, it sounds more like nรญ hฤo.
However, in pinyin, you still write it with a third tone because thatโs the characterโs true tone when pronounced in isolation. (The best thing is to learn Chinese characters as quickly as possible and then you wonโt need to worry about issues like this!)
Other Basic Greetings In Chinese
Other than the famous ไฝ ๅฅฝ nฤญ hฤo, there are some other ways of saying โhelloโ in Chinese. If you are speaking to someone you want to show respect to, there is a more formal version:
#2 ๆจๅฅฝ Nรญn hฤo (Hello)
ๆจ nรญn is a more polite form of ไฝ nฤญ, and if you look carefully at the character, you will see that it is written slightly differently.
The ๆจ nรญn form is roughly equivalent to vous in French whereas ไฝ nฤญ is like the tu form, but in Chinese, ๆจ nรญn is less commonly used. You might perhaps use it with your boss, although this is by no means sure.
On the other hand, you would probably use it with the CEO of your company, and you would use it when meeting a visiting VIP.
If you stay in a hotel, the staff there might use it, but they might equally just stick to ไฝ nฤญ.
If you are addressing more than one person, there is another way to say โhelloโ, like this:
#3 ไฝ ไปฌๅฅฝ Nฤญmen hฤo (Hello)
The difference here is that ไฝ ไปฌ nฤญmen is the plural form of โyouโ, but otherwise, it works just the same. You can use this when addressing two people or small groups.
When addressing larger groups, thereโs yet another way to say it, like this:
#4 ๅคงๅฎถๅฅฝ Dร jiฤ hฤo (Hello everyone)
ๅคงๅฎถ dร jiฤ is the Chinese word for โeveryoneโ, and examples of when you might use this include a teacher greeting their class, someone about to give a speech greeting their audience or somebody entering a room for a meeting.
One other useful expression to know is the Chinese for โnice to meet youโ, which is:
Word for word, this literally means โvery happy know youโ, and you can use this whenever you meet somebody for the first time.
Time-Related Greetings In Chinese
Just like in English, Chinese also has ways of greeting people depending on the time of day, for example:
#6 ๆฉไธๅฅฝ Zฤoshร ng hฤo (Good morning)
In this expression, ๆฉไธ zฤoshร ng is the word for morning, and this is followed by ๅฅฝ hฤo, which weโve already seen โ so literally, this means โmorning goodโ.
Here are some other examples:
#7 ไธๅๅฅฝ Xiร wลญ hฤo (Good afternoon)
#8 ๆไธๅฅฝ Wฤnshร ng hฤo(Good evening)
As you can probably guess by now, ไธๅ xiร wลญ and ๆไธ wฤnshร ng are the Chinese words for โafternoonโ and โeveningโ respectively.
A common shortened version you might hear is ๆฉ zฤo, which is the direct equivalent of saying โmorningโ in English โ but be aware that you canโt do the same for the others!
Informal Chinese Greetings
The greetings weโve seen so far are expressions you can use with anyone, but among friends, they might sound a little stuffy or formal.
Here are some more natural ways to greet people you know well:
#9 ๅจ Hฤi, hฤi (Hi! Hey!)
#10 ่ฏถ รi!(Hey!)
These words are just the same as in English, and you can use them in the same way. Often, you follow the word (โinterjectionโ is probably more accurate because theyโre not really official โwordsโ) with the personโs name or nickname, like this:
In the first example, ๅฐๆ็ซ xiฤolฤnmฤo, โlazybonesโ, is the personโs nickname โ literally, it means โlittle lazy catโ.
The second example demonstrates a common way Chinese people address others they are on familiar terms with.
If the person is older, they use the word ่ lฤo, โoldโ, and the personโs family name. Here, the person is called Wang, so he (or she) is referred to as โOld Wangโ.
If the person is younger, you just replace ่ lฤo with ๅฐ xiฤo, meaning โsmallโ or โlittleโ.
As a non-native speaker, itโs best not to start using ๅฐ xiฤo and ่ lฤo first yourself โ but if other people use these terms to refer to someone, itโs ok to follow their lead.
Note also that this form of address is rarely used with non-Chinese.
A Particularly Chinese Way Of Greeting Someone
If you spend any time in China, thereโs another expression that you will often hear, and if youโre not aware of the real meaning, it might seem strange at first:
#11 ไฝ ๅ้ฅญไบๅ๏ผNฤญ chฤซ fร n le ma?(Have you eaten?)
The thing to remember about this expression is that the person is not literally asking if youโve had anything to eat โ instead, itโs more like another way of saying hello.
In a way, itโs not so different from โhow are you?โ in English. If someone asks you this, they arenโt expecting an in-depth low-down on the current state of your health, itโs just a pleasant thing to say.
Similarly, in Chinese, theyโre not expecting details about the meal youโve just eaten or how hungry you are, itโs just a common thing to say to show you care.
So how should you reply?
If you have eaten, you can say:
ๅไบ Chฤซ le (Iโve eaten)
And if you havenโt:
่ฟๆฒกๆ Hรกi mรฉi yลu (Not yet)
Thatโs all you need to say โ and then you just carry on with your conversation as normal. This type of thing is common in many East Asian countries, and Vietnamese and Thai also have similar expressions.
However, it can be a little disconcerting at first, especially when people speak to you in English asking โhave you had lunch yet?โ โ when all they really mean is โhelloโ!
How To Say How Are You? In Chinese
So how do you say โhow are you?โ if you do actually want to enquire about somebodyโs health? In Chinese, itโs very simple โ you can say it like this:
#12 ไฝ ๅฅฝๅ๏ผNฤญ hฤo ma?(How are you?)
As you can see, this is just the same as the word for โhelloโ with the Chinese particle ๅ ma tacked on the end to turn it into a question. Literally, it just means โyou good [question particle]โ.
Another possibility is this:
#13 ไฝ ๆ่ฟๆไนๆ ท๏ผNฤญ zuรฌjรฌn zฤnmeyร ng? (How have you been recently?)
In this expression, we have ไฝ nฤญ, which we know already, followed by ๆ่ฟ zuรฌjรฌn (recently), and then ๆไนๆ ท zฤnmeyร ng (how). Word for word, it means โyou recently how?โ
One last expression thatโs interesting to note is the Chinese expression:
#14 ๅฅฝไน ไธ่ง Hฤo jiลญ bรบ jiร n(Long time no see)
It literally means โgood long no seeโ, but it can be also be translated as โlong time no seeโ. The reason itโs interesting is that the source of the ungrammatical expression we use in English is, in fact, none other than this very Chinese phrase!
How To Say Goodbye In Chinese
When itโs time to take your leave, Chinese also has a set of simple expressions you can use.
The most common way to say โgoodbyeโ is:
#15 ๅ่ง Zร ijiร n(Goodbye)
The first character ๅ zร i means โagainโ and the second one means โseeโ, so literally, this means something like โagain seeโ, or more naturally, โsee you againโ. This is the general word for saying goodbye if you donโt know when you will see the other person next.
If you do know when you are going to see each other again, there are some other expressions you can use. For example:
#16 ๆๅคฉ่ง Mรญngtiฤn jiร n(See you tomorrow)
#17 ๅๅคฉ่ง Hรฒutiฤn jiร n (See you the day after tomorrow)
As you can easily guess, ๆๅคฉ mรญngtiฤn and hรฒutiฤn are the Chinese words for โtomorrowโ and โthe day after tomorrowโ.
You could also say something like:
#18 ไธไธชๆๆ่ง Xiร ge xฤซngqฤซ jiร n (See you next week)
Here, of course, ไธไธชๆๆ xiร ge xฤซngqฤซ means โnext weekโ.
Two More Ways Of Saying โGoodbyeโ In Chinese
Just like when saying โhelloโ, there are also some other less formal ways of saying โgoodbyeโ, and the most common is this:
#19 ๆๆ Bฤibฤi(Bye-bye)
Itโs no coincidence that the Chinese version sounds like the English one โ because itโs borrowed directly from English.
If youโre chatting online, you are also bound to come across โ88โ. This is because the pronunciation of the Chinese number โ8โ, ๅ ซ bฤ,sounds quite similar to bฤi โ so โ88โ is just the internet version of ๆๆ.
Saying Goodnight In Chinese
At the end of the day just before you go to bed, youโll also need to know how to say โgoodnightโ, which, in Chinese, is:
#20 ๆๅฎ Wฤn ฤn (Good night)
Weโve already seen ๆ wฤn, which means โeveningโ or โnightโ, and the second character, ๅฎ ฤn, means โpeaceโ or โpeacefulโ โ so this expression literally means โpeaceful nightโ.
And thereโs one more expression youโll need before you close your eyes and go to sleep:
#21 ๅฅฝๆขฆ Hฤo mรจng(Sweet dreams)
As you can see, in Chinese, you donโt wish people โsweet dreamsโ but rather โgood dreamsโ just before you switch off the light.
FAQs About Greetings In Chinese
How do you greet someone in Chinese?
The common greeting in Chinese is โไฝ ๅฅฝโ (nว hวo), which means โhello.โ You can also say โๆจๅฅฝโ (nรญn hวo) to show respect, especially for elders or in formal situations.
How to reply ni hao ma?
To reply to โไฝ ๅฅฝๅโ (nว hวo ma, โHow are you?โ), you can say โๆๅพๅฅฝโ (wว hฤn hวo), meaning โIโm good.โ For a casual response, you could simply say โ่ฟๅฏไปฅโ (hรกi kฤ yว), meaning โI'm okay.โ
What to say instead of ni hao ma?
Instead of โไฝ ๅฅฝๅโ, you can ask โๆ่ฟๆไนๆ ท?โ (zuรฌjรฌn zฤnmeyร ng?), which means โHow have you been lately?โ This feels more conversational and natural in many contexts.
Lots Of Fun Greetings In Chinese To Practise
Thereโs nothing difficult about greetings in Chinese, and all you have to do is remember which ones to use at the right times and with the right people.
As always, the best way to fix them in your memory is to practise them as much as possible, so always look for every chance to use them with native speakers.
And then, when you do, you can look forward to hearing many times over ๅพ้ซๅ ด่ฎค่ฏไฝ hฤn gฤoxรฌng rรจnshi nฤญ โ very happy to meet you!
